Why Phoenix Suns & Chris Webber Could Work Out

September 08 07

Sean Deveny of Sporting News reports on the possibility that Chris Webber could join the Phoenix Suns:

There is a darkhorse candidate, though, in the marketplace for both players: Phoenix. Yes, no team runs more than the Suns, and, yes, running is not Webber’s strong suit these days, but Phoenix could be setting up a nifty recruiting battle with the Mavs for both Webber and Brown.

I just wrote about Gary Payton looking for a final contract from the Warriors or Heat. Webber is in a similar situation. The forward is past his prime, but with a 34 million dollar buyout in his pocket courtesy of the Philadelphia 76ers, he can wait for the right situation.

On the surface, Phoenix and Webber look like an odd fit. Once you give it some thought, C-Webb might be able help the Suns.

Webber would give Mike D’Antoni another experienced facilitator for the Suns’ half-court sets. In some situations, the club thrived when they slowed the tempo. For example, in last year’s Western Conference semi-finals, Phoenix did quite well when they played a half-court game against San Antonio. Webber would enhance these sets, finding Leandro Barbosa on a backdoor cut or lobbing the rock to a soaring Shawn Marion on an alley-oop.

The Suns free-wheeling approach is based on basketball IQ. Well, Webber is an intelligent player. In Sacramento, he often played point center from the hi-post. And after knee surgery, Webber has had to survive on his veteran savvy.

Phoenix’s laid-back approach would suit Webber. As a veteran, he would appreciate the freedom players receive from the coaching staff. Practices are relaxed, light, and fun.

Surprisingly, the Suns and C-Webb have a lot in common once you give the idea some thought.

everyone is forgetting the important thing here. The Suns don’t want/need him. They wont pay for him! Even if it is the veteran minimum, it has to be doubled for the luxury tax they would pay, and D’Antoni isnt fond of moving outside eight player rotations anyway. .

kurt thomas had the same question marks before he came to phoenix. after a half the season under his belt he could run with the best of them. he also dropped weight he wasn’t using and i believe that C-weBB could do the same. We Suns fans need to know we have intimidating players on the bench for the playoff run in 08!!!! .

C-Webb could only improve the Suns offense and give them veteran leadership. .

C.Webb is just Right for SUNS.He is not old to play, just beacuse the others are younger.Plus SUNS must play half- court at some points. .

C. Webb no longer has the games to work in with the current Suns uptemop games that they play. C. Webb is to slow becuase of injuries during his career. I think he fits with a team that has half court type of offense. He just no longer has speed afoot to run the uptempo game. .

I think he has had an attitude problem wherever he has played except for Detroit. If he could solve that, he might be able to play 10 or 15 minutes........MIGHT, .

webber procrastinated too long and lost his chance to return to the pistons, once dunars saw webber was not committing to the pistons right away, he passed on webber and signed the younger players. Smart move by Dumars. Dumb procrastination by Webber, who’s on his last legs.both dallas n phoenix are good teams, will webber enchance or disrupt the tean he lands on?he could sit on the bench with jalen rose and still get paid. .

this could be good, but they can get a better deal now that its official that d-wade and shaq are going to be traded to the celtics. This would mean that rfom that trade, more opportunities would come for pheonix to make a trade with the lakers (who have d-wade and shaq), and the celtics. .
