NBA suspends Griffin again

10.20.2004

New York, NY (Basketball News) - Minnesota forward Eddie Griffin was suspended without pay for the first three games of the season on Wednesday.

Griffin pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge in an incident that took place in Texas last year. NBA players who are guilty of criminal charges are automatically suspended by the league.

"As an organization, we understand today’s decision by the NBA," said Timberwolves Vice President of basketball operations Kevin McHale. "It addresses an event from Eddie’s past and we know that Eddie regrets the incident and is deeply sorry for that occurred."

Griffin, who has been beset by various legal and emotional problems, played with the Rockets last season.

The 22-year-old was selected by the Nets with the seventh pick of the 2001 NBA Draft and then dealt to Houston for the draft rights to forward Richard Jefferson, center Jason Collins and guard Brandon Armstrong.

Griffin also played one season at Seton Hall University, and attended Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia.

In 150 NBA games, Griffin has averaged 8.7 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest.
