08.4.2006

Phoenix, AZ (Basketball News) - The Phoenix Suns signed guard Leandro Barbosa to a five-year contract extension on Friday that will begin at the start of the 2007-08 season. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Barbosa flourished in his third season with the Suns last year, posting career-highs in points (13.1), rebounds (2.6), assists (2.6), field goal percentage (team-high 44 percent), three-pointers made (87) and minutes played (27.9) in 57 games, including 11 starts.

"We are really excited about keeping Leandro with us," said Suns head coach and executive vice president of basketball operations/general manager Mike DAntoni. "We set out to keep our core together and LB is certainly a huge part of what we do. He is only going to get better."

The 23-year-old Brazilian-native played even better in the 2006 NBA Playoffs, averaging 14.2 points while shooting 47 percent from the floor.

For his career, Barbosa has averaged 9.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 190 games with Phoenix.
