Payton to remain with the Lakers

Payton took a huge pay cut to join the Lakers last summer with the hopes of capturing the first NBA title of his career. However, Los Angeles was ousted in five games by the Detroit Pistons in the Finals.

In the championship round, Payton averaged only 4.2 points per game, as he made just 9-of-28 shots from the floor. During the regular season, he started all 82 contests and averaged 14.6 points, 5.5 assists and 4.2 rebounds per outing.

In 14 NBA seasons with Seattle, Milwaukee and the Lakers, Payton has averaged 18.0 points and 7.2 assists per contest.
