Raptors fire GM Grunwald 04.1.2004
|
Grunwald, who has been with the club since 1997, will be replaced on an interim basis by former Detroit Pistons GM and Raptors consultant Jack McCloskey.
The struggling Raptors (30-44) have lost five straight games and 19 of their last 25 overall, including Wednesday’s seven-point loss to the Golden State Warriors, who had been drubbed by the Philadelphia 76ers the night before.
With just eight games remaining in its season, Toronto is currently 1 1/2 games behind the Sixers for 10th place in the Eastern Conference and 3 1/2 games adrift of Boston for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Grunwald was hired 10 games into the 1997-98 campaign when the team was 1-9. Toronto finished 16-66 that season, but would later make the playoffs in three straight years from 2000-02.
However, an injury-plagued 2002-03 season under Lenny Wilkens led to a 24-58 record and an offseason coaching change.
In June, Grunwald hired first-time head coach Kevin O’Neill.
