Riley’s leave will end after All-Star break

02.13.2007

Miami, FL (Basketball News) - Miami Heat head coach Pat Riley will return from his leave of absence after the All-Star break.

Riley made the announcement prior to Tuesday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He will begin running practice again when the team returns following the All-Star break.

His first game back will be February 21 when the Heat travel to Houston.

Riley stepped aside from his duties on January 3 because of health related issues. He was suffering from knee and hip conditions, both of which required surgery.

Assistant Ron Rothstein took over on the bench and Miami has been 13-9 since. The Heat were just 13-17 under Riley’s leadership.

The team plays one more game before the All-Star break — Tuesday night against Portland.

Riley returned to the Heat after a two-year hiatus in December 2005, and the team racked up a 41-20 record and captured the Southeast Division crown under the guidance of the veteran general.

Riley, who has also coached the Lakers and Knicks during his illustrious career, won four championships as the head coach of the Lakers (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988) and led the Heat to the title in 2006.
