"The crowd out here is unbelievable," said forward Tayshaun Prince. "We are having a great time."
Detroit captured the championship by defeating the heavily favored Los Angeles Lakers in five games in the NBA Finals.
The festivities kicked off with a 1.3-mile parade from Jefferson Avenue to the Hart Plaza and then will eventually move to the The Palace of Auburn Hills, where the team clinched the title on Tuesday.
"I am feeling all good inside," said forward Rasheed Wallace, who was wearing a Red Wings retro Gordie Howe jersey.
Jerseys are a common theme at the celebration as head coach Larry Brown is wearing an Ivan Rodriguez Detroit Tigers sweater. The well-traveled Brown won his first NBA title in 21 years as a head coach in the league.
This marks the third title for the Pistons, who also won in 1989 with a sweep of the Lakers.
