What’s up with the Kings?

01.9.2007

(Basketball News) - It’s still a mystery as to why the Sacramento Kings can’t seem to climb over the .500 mark and into the thick of the playoff picture in the Western Conference.

The Kings roster has plenty of talent. Center Brad Miller, forward Ron Artest, who is the subject of trade rumors, and point guard Mike Bibby make up a formidable trio, while guard Kevin Martin has been a huge surprise and John Salmons, Kenny Thomas and Shareef Abdur-Rahim makeup a solid supporting cast.

Sacramento, which has made the playoffs eight straight years, is a disappointing 14-17 and is tied with Los Angeles Clippers for last place in the Pacific Division.

The streaking Cleveland Cavaliers open a season-long seven-game road trip when they visit the Kings on Tuesday at ARCO Arena. It is the first of two meetings between the clubs this season. Cleveland is scheduled to host the Kings on March 13th at Quicken Loans Arena. Cleveland has lost eight of 11 and nine of its last 13 at Sacramento. The Kings have won 12 of the last 14 meetings in the series.

Sacramento attempts to halt a two-game losing streak. On Saturday, Zach Randolph posted 32 points and 15 rebounds as the Portland Trail Blazers downed the Kings, 110-105, in overtime at ARCO Arena.

Bibby finished with 28 points in the loss to Portland for the Kings, who have lost six of their last 10 games overall. Artest scored 23 and Martin netted 22 in defeat.

The Kings, who wrap up a three-game homestand against Cleveland, are 10-9 at home this season. They will visit the Trail Blazers on Friday at the Rose Garden.

Sacramento, which is 1-1 against the Trail Blazers this season, has won two straight after losing its last three at Portland. The Kings are scheduled to visit Portland on March 3rd at the Rose Garden in the final contest of the campaign between the clubs.

Martin is averaging a team-best 21.2 points per game, while Thomas has grabbed a club-high 7.5 rebounds and Bibby has dished out a team-high 5.8 assists per contest.
