Spurs need veterans to step up

01.17.2007

(Basketball News) - The San Antonio Spurs are a veteran club that has been put together to win now. They are in second place and trail the defending Western Conference champion and first place Dallas Mavericks by 4 1/2 games in the Southwest Division.

All-Stars Tim Duncan and Tony Parker are leading the Spurs once again. Duncan leads the squad in scoring (19.9 ppg) and rebounding (10.3 rpg), while Parker, who is second on the team in scoring at 19.2 points per game, has dished out a club-high 5.6 assists per contest.

The Los Angeles Lakers attempt to extend their winning streak to three games when they visit the Spurs on Wednesday evening at the AT&T Center. It is the second meeting of the season between the squads. On December 10th, superstar Kobe Bryant poured in a game-high 34 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Lakers past San Antonio, 106-99, at the Staples Center.

These two teams have split the last six meetings at San Antonio. The Lakers have won two of the last three contests in this series.

San Antonio tries to get back on the winning track against the Lakers. On Monday, Kirk Hinrich paced five Bulls players in double figures with 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds and seven assists as Chicago defeated the Spurs, 99-87, at the United Center.

Manu Ginobili scored 22 points and Duncan netted 21 and pulled down 16 rebounds in the loss to Chicago for the Spurs, who had a four-game winning streak halted. Bruce Bowen and Michael Finley both ended with 10 points in defeat.

The Spurs are 14-6 at home this season. They will host the injury-riddled Hornets on Friday. San Antonio defeated the Hornets on the road twice this season.

San Antonio is 18-3 when it scores 100 or more points this season. The Spurs are 1-4 when their opponent reaches the century mark.
