Recap and Highlights for December 12

  By Christopher Sells
12.13.2008 - Updated on 12.13.2008

Sixers 72, Cavaliers 88
The Cavs made it 11 straight behind LeBron James’ 28 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three blocks. Anderson Varejao added 17 and 7 in his first start of the year, replacing the injured Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Willie Green led Philly with 19 points, Andre Iguodala had 16.

Hawks 87, Heat 73

Atlanta snapped Miami’s five game winning streak behind 21 points and seven rebounds from Hoe Johnson. Josh Smith and Mike Bibby would each score 15; Smith had seven boards and Bobby eight assists. Dwyane Wade had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Heat, who were outrebounded 53 to 37 and out free-throwed 32 to 10. Both teams shot below 40%.

Raptors 101, Nets 79
Vince Carter went 0-13 and the Nets shot an abysmal 31% as the Raptors rolled Friday night. Chris Bosh led Toronto with 18 points, Joey Graham and Jason Kapono each scored 16. Carter finished with three points; Devin Harris and Yi Jianlian each had 14.

Hornets 82, Celtics 94
A 17-4 run early in the third quarter gave the Celtics a lead they would not relinquish and the team won its 14th straight game. Paul Pierce had 28 points, six rebounds and six assists while Kevin Garnett put in 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Celtics. David West’s 23 points and 14 rebounds led the Hornets; Chris Paul had 20 points, 14 assists and three steals. The Hornets shot only 35% from the field in their second loss in nine games.

Pacers 100, Pistons 114
Despite a career-high 42 points from the Pacers’ Danny Granger, the Pistons held on in the final seconds for the win. Richard Hamilton led Detroit with 28 points while Allen Iverson and Rodney Stuckey combined for 38 points and 20 assists. The Pacers will look back at their 21 turnovers and the Pistons’ 21 points off of those turnovers as a major reason that they lost this game. Both teams’ field goal percentage was in the mid-50s.

Bulls 96, Grizzlies 103
After winning only five of their first 20 games, the Grizzlies have now run off three straight victories as they overcame a 14-point Bulls lead to win Friday night. Rudy Gay had 29 popints for Memphis and Hakim Warrick scored 12 of his 21 in the fourth quarter. Ben Gordon led the Bulls with 26 points, Luol Deng contributed 19.

Spurs 98, Wolves 86

The Spurs didn’t need overtime to beat Minnesota this time; they closed things out in regulation for their fifth straight win. Tony Parker and Tim Duncan both scored 17 points in the game; Parker would also add nine assists and Duncan 13 rebounds and five blocks. Al Jefferson scored 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Wolves who have now lost their eighth straight.

Magic 113, Suns 112
Grant Hill hit the game-winning layup against his former team to propel the Suns to their third win in four games. Steve Nash scored 21 and had 10 assists, Amare Stoudemire scored 21 and had 14 rebounds and newly-acquired Jason Richardson had 21 off the bench. The Magic had to comeback from being down by as many as 12 before falling short in the final minute. Dwight Howard led Orlando with 19 points, but left in the third quarter due to injury. Rashard Lewis scored 18.

Clippers 120, Blazers 112
Coming into tonight’s game, Steve Blake had missing only two fould shots all year. He missed three in the final seconds of regulation that would have effectively iced the game for Portland and the Clippers handed the Blazers their second home loss of the season in double overtime. Baron Davis hit shots to extend the game, including a buzzer beater to end the fourth, and ended up with 27 points, Zach Randolph finished with 38 points and 11 rebounds. Brandon Roy scored 38 and dished nine assists for the Blazers. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 22 and blocked three shots, Greg Oden scored 15 points and pulled down 15 boards.

Rockets 119, Warriors 108

Tracy McGrady nearly pulled off a triple double in his first game in about two weeks as Houston ran away from Golden State. McGrady finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists while Yao Ming added 19 points and 14 rebounds. Andris Biedrins led Golden State with 18 points and 12 rebounds and C.J. Watson had 17 points.

Kings 103, Lakers 112
For a while, it looked like the Kings might pull off the unthinkable and upset the Lakers twice in the span of a week. The Lakers, however, pulled it together in the third quarter and won their fifth game in six tries. Kobe Bryant scored 32 for L.A. and Pau Gasol added 18 points and 11 rebounds. John Salmons had 26 for the Kings, who have now lost nine of 10.
