The L.A. Lakers Are Positioning Themselves for the Future with Pau Gasol

  By Jason Kelly
02.13.2008 - Updated on 02.13.2008

The L.A. Lakers are not going to peak this year and Phoenix’s acquisition of Shaquille O’Neal was not a knee-jerk reaction (more on this later). I don’t know how they are going to do in the playoffs, but next year they are going to be devastating. Bynum is planning to come back in about a month, but his true impact will be felt next season.

I simply do not believe he will have enough time with the team to get back into shape and acclimate to his new power forward, Pau Gasol. Gasol and Kobe Bryant have gelled for a number of reasons, not the least of which are that they are smart, experienced, veteran All-Stars. I do not have a handle on Bynum’s basketball IQ, but he misses in those other three categories.

If I were a Lakers fan, I would not hold out too much hope for this year. Without Bynum returning to form, which is unlikely this year, Gasol does not really add the defensive post presence needed in the post-season. He is a fair defender and he can grab rebounds by the bushel when others on his team are boxing out, but Bynum is needed for that to happen. The Lakers’ post-season success may happen this year, but I wouldn’t count on it. The great thing about it is that the Lakers have these two great players who are only expected to put out a good showing this post-season. No pressure until the 2008-2009 season.

Next year, though – and the five or so that follow (until Bryant and/or Gasol flame-out – or maybe when Jerry Buss gives in to Kobe’s trade demands), the Lakers are going to be a juggernaut. Give 20-year-old Bynum an off-season and training camp to improve on his double-double stat line and work with these two All-Stars and the Lakers have three legitimate scoring threats. With Derek Fisher keeping everyone in line for the next few seasons, it is frightening prospect for the West.

Because the Gasol move helps the Lakers more next year (and the years after that) than this year, the Shaq trade cannot be considered a knee-jerk reaction to the Gasol trade. Very few Suns’ fans, except the Kool-Aid drinking die-hard optimists, believe Shaq will be helpful any further than this season and next. This move is also potentially a cap-killer that will tie the Suns’ finances up for years to come. That was a “win now” move whereas the Gasol move has upside in years to come vastly superior to any immediate upside.

Along those lines, the San Antonio Spurs are correct in thinking they do not have to make any moves for the play-off run this year. However, they better be thinking about next year already.

I have always disliked the Lakers, but I have to admit their current roster (when Bynum gets back) is scary. I won’t give them the finals yet but their future is definitely brighter then the aging Spurs and now the aging Suns...and if the Mavs get Kidd, the aging Mavs. This has to be the year for one of those three to make it (primarily because Bynum may not be himself when he gets back from injury) because the Lakers are unfortunately here for the long run...damn Lakers. .

I think LA will get far this year but there are strongest teams that will fight for the price but everybody could see the power of gasol, odom and bryant together ans it scares any GM.So if you add bynum and the other great players LA haves i’m sure next seasson LA will fight for the price.Gasol is not a panacea (i rememeber the missed FT on play-offs) but is what bryant needed to success. .

wow man...this was a good article...im a lakers fan...and this was a good article...jason is merely pointing out the fact that bynum doesnt have the experience to gel with pau quickly...and that’s true, it took bynum quite a while to get used to the current roster...and he’s going to be coming back from injury as well...so he’s going to need time to get his timing as well as his endurance back...jeez...he just mentions bynum’s iq, he doesnt say it’s bad...so all you people that started going crazy on that apparently didnt read the article very well...but the lakers will make some noise in the playoffs and become monsters once everyone gets used to each other (odom is gonna play like the monster he was in miami)...as for the suns...something had to happen...the suns had the same roster for the last 3 years and they never even made it to the conference finals...why? cuz they didnt have a solid big man...maybe shaq wont last long, but im sure he’ll do something... .

jason you suck! the lakers for me is the strongest team today in the NBA if andrew bynum gets back. even the boston celtics are no match if they will face in the finals. and youre suns would be just a semifinals team. .

dumbest article ever just because your suns made a bad trade doesnt mean you can downplay the significance of gasol. face it suns are the new jazz...never gonna win a championship. The lakers are the new bulls. We just had a bigger break to reestablish our dynasty. .

I find it quite incredible that I said the Lakers were better this season for the Gasol trade but that the future was brighter than the present, and in response I get Laker-Lovers bashing the statement. Don’t you get it? Or, do you just yell without thinking? .

I look at it this way...the people who provide their negativity do not provide reference or fact for their angst. The Lakers are on their road to fruition. The Suns, they have handcuffed themselves for the next 2+ years unless they unleash a monster trade like Dallas did for the Jason Kidd and the Nets organization. You see the West is shaking things up while the East is sitting back once again. What do they have but KG, Allen and Pierce pulling for the East. So how do you sum it up, the Lakers are going to an historic 7-2 record on the road after tonight’s win, and no one is going to give them a chance in the post season? Yeah, that’s what they said about the NY Giants for the Superbowl...get ready to be awakened NBA fans! .

I’m gonna leave Jason to you guys—your mouths are watering like lions. James Katt is my target\1 James, I love the lakers just as much as you, been a fan since I was born—BUT, you gotta be a little more impartial when it comes to Bynum. I love the kid, but this season looks like last season—killer first half, invisible second half. Better than Greg Oden?!?! The dude hasn’t played a single game in the league—on that note, Mbenga is better than Oden. Amare Stoudemaire is not a center, so it’s not really fair to compare. I’ll say this though, he is catching up with Howard, but not quickly. Can’t wait for his return so he can resume the chase. .

HOGWASH!!! The Lakers do not consist of Kobe Gasol and Bynum. Have you seen their bench??? The suns trade was a knee jerk and shaq is going to be lame for the remainder of his career. .

Great article and observation Jason, I guess the kool-aid drinking suns fan just doesn’t like the truth about the diminishing returns on Shaq. I agree, Lakers are set up for years to come, next year should be fun! .

Andrew Bynum is pretty smart.Look at how far he has developed in just 3 years - and with very limited basketball experience in high school to boot.Andrew Bynum just lacks experience. After all, he’s just a kid and years away from his peak.Yet, despite being years away from his peak, Andrew is starting to become one of THE best centers in the game. He IS BETTER than Greg Oden. He IS BETTER than Amare Stoudemaire. He is clearly catching up with Dwight Howard - who is still in many ways raw. Andrew also has the superior coach in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. This is why he is progressing at a faster rate than Dwight Howard.Andrew should work in the off season on his lower body. I remember when Kareem near the end of his career worked hard to building up his legs to contend with Mark Eaton and other giant centers. He was successful at at - resulting in championships until Magic had to leave the game. Strengthening his lower body would help prevent knee problems also.Soon, Andrew will be an all-star as well.Hopefully, and I assume he is, Andrew is working on himself with Kareem - just as Derek Fisher worked on himself when recovering from ankle surgery - such that Derek became a serious 3-point threat and a better shooter - resulting in the Laker’s first championship with Phil. .
