The Miami Heat Roster Can Be Fixed

  By Alden Gonzalez
01.27.2008 - Updated on 01.27.2008

There are a lot of doubters out there.

Not about the Miami Heat’s chances this season – that’s been decided since the New Year – but that this team’s roster is unfixable. That not even the New York Knicks’ roster is in as bad of shape as Miami’s.

Players are too old; they’re making too much money; Shaquille O’Neal is useless; Pat Riley is out the door; Dwyane Wade will be leaving soon.

I’ve always said that after this season Miami has a two-year window to build another championship contender and keep Wade happy so he doesn’t jet to The Windy City.

And there’s still hope.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to what the Heat should do to become legitimate again for the 2008-09 season:

  1. Tell Wade and Shaq to chill.

You can’t be a title contender if your two starts aren’t healthy, and obviously, Wade and Shaq are not. Wade still hasn’t been himself since the shoulder injury, and Shaq can barely get off the ground because of his hip.

I know a lot of people think Shaq simply can’t do it anymore, but he can. No he can’t be L.A. Shaq or even first-year-in-Miami Shaq. But he can be 17 and 8 Shaq on a consistent basis if he’s healthy enough. That’s a big “if” but if he sits out the rest of this season, that word gets smaller.

So just stay on the sidelines, Shaq. And Wade, have a convenient injury within the next coming days and stay out of Olympic competition so you can come back next year looking like NBA Finals Wade (they’re going to need it).

  1. Convince Alonzo Mourning to come back.

Is that selfish of me to ask that? Maybe it is. But this is just a fantasy, right?

Truth is Mourning would run through a brick wall right now if Riles told him to, and after seeing him on TNT during Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I kind of got the feeling he’s going to try to make a comeback.

Zo is one of the proudest NBA players ever, and I don’t think he wants the last image of him walking off the court to be a limping one.

Even at this age, he’s a force defensively, a huge relief to Shaq and a huge motivation in the locker room for this team. Plus, he’d play backup center at a very cheap price.

  1. Trade Mark Blount, Ricky Davis and Smush Parker to the Seattle Supersonics for Kurt Thomas and Delonte West.

I believe Seattle would take this deal because of how badly they need a shooting guard. For the Heat, it would work out great because they can get rid of Blount’s big contract and the never-used Parker. In return, they get the expiring deal of Kurt Thomas and a cheap point guard in West – two positions the Heat are lacking with their bench.

That would drop the Heat’s salary for 2008-09 to $44,658,781 – under the salary cap.

As for the Sonics, they wouldn’t mind taking on Blount because they desperately want a 2-guard and they have money to spare. If at first they don’t budge, throw in this year’s second-round pick. The Heat won’t need it.

  1. Get Shaq to restructure his deal.

At first, it would’ve been impossible under NBA rules for Shaq to restructure his contract because the Heat were over the salary cap. But with the Heat under the cap, The Diesel can do it.

Will he?

I think so. Shaq should be embarrassed that they pay him so much and he barely ever plays. But it isn’t just that. Shaq desperately wants to win another championship, and he knows the Heat can’t do that unless they free themselves of some of the burden of his contract.

  1. Draft Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose.

The Heat are going to keep sinking this season (especially if Wade and Shaq take most of the rest of the season off, like I said). And although that’s not a good thing, it will get them a lottery pick.

Miami should take Rose or Beasley. Which ever is available (obviously, Beasley would be option No. 1).

  1. Pick up a big-time free agent.

With all the money the Heat have freed up, they can go out and get that big-time free agent that will be a second/third option and get them back on top.

I strongly believe Shawn Marion will opt out of his deal in Phoenix after this season, and I think he would welcome a trip to South Beach.

If not, the Heat can get Ron Artest (who WILL opt out) or Gilbert Arenas.

Just like the draft, that player needs to be a point guard or a small forward because those are the areas sorely lacking. If Miami drafts Rose, Artest or Marion would be the guys. If it’s Beasley, then Arenas or maybe even Baron Davis are the guys they should go after.

  1. Resign Chris Quinn, Kurt Thomas and Dorrell Wright to short-term, minimum deals.

If Wright doesn’t want to sign a minimum deal, good riddance.

  1. Shore up the roster.

The Heat should have some money left over to sign some veteran guys to solidify the bench and not hit the luxury tax. Key additions: perimeter players who are good spot-up shooters and defenders.

Wow, I feel like I just solved the theory of relativity. Best thing about it is the Heat wouldn’t have to give up Udonis Haslem. With these moves, the Heat can have a starting lineup of: Davis/Arenas – Wade – Beasley – Haslem - O’Neal; or Rose – Wade- Artest/Marion – Haslem - O’Neal.

Off the bench, they’d have Cook, West, Mourning, possibly Wright and whoever else they pick up from free agency.

Pretty easy, right?

With trade of Shaq and the aquisition of Marion, what direction should the Heat take? .

Bito: If this was Major League Baseball, that would apply. But there’s a salary cap in the NBA, and you can’t just spend all the money you wan’t just because you get money from selling tickets. Everyone needs to follow the salary cap, and the Heat are way over it right now. .

OK everyone try to follow me.... Alonzo Mourning is OUT FOR THE YEAR. That means he will not be playing for the remainder of his ONE YEAR contract. If he is traded he will not necessarily go to the other team, only on paper. His contract wil expire, and he can resign with the Heat in the offseason and either retire a Heat, or make a comeback. Why is that so difficult to understand? .

zo is not going nowhere if he decides to return for one more season hell play for the heat, What the Heat need to do is trade Davis, Parker and and try to acquire a solid defender ( like Posey) , i think the heat have enough money to get a solid player the arena is always sold out and they get income from sponsors so they can bring artes and bibby.Go heat .

The Kings are getting nobody for Artest regardless, he is opting out and what does that get them? this way they let go of over 11,000,000 of salary and bring in nothing but expiring contracts. They will not have to deal with Smush Parker, they can waive quinn, and Kurt Thomas is paid more than Artest, and that contract will be gone. In terms of rebuilding, which this team most obviously is in the process of doing, this would be a great trade. The bait for a valuable player or draft pick is Mike Bibby, especially with the way Udrih played. This would allow the Kings to seriously pursue Marion and other big name free agents. The Jason Kidd trade was mentioned as the typical fan fantasy trade, which is why I made a serious trade proposal after. Regardless, if you knew how to do simple math, yes I know Jason Kidd makes 19,000,000 but we would be unloading, J-Will @almost 9 mill, Ricky Davis at almost 7 mill Zo at 2 mil whom teams WOULD take because its an expiring contract, and the heat could always sign him for the veteran’s min next season if he makes a comeback, and Parker at over 2 mill. thats 20 mill in contracts, bringing in magloire’s expiring contract of 4 Mill is where the room comes. I know that trade would not happen genius, and for more obvious reasons than Kidd’s salary, but it is at least a feasible trade unlike your proposal. The second one is one that should seriously be considered, however, as it would be really beneficial to all involved. .

I think you are seriously deluded. First there is no way Seattle will give up expiring contracts for Blount’s beast. Second Shaq won’t restructure his contract. Third we should not even think about drafting Beasley, he is a cancer its Rose for the win. There is no way we will have the money to sign Shawn Marion, plus he would not be nearly as good in our slow offense, he excels in the hurried up where he exploits you with his athleticism. What Miami needs to do is let Davis, and J-Will go, draft Rose, sign a couple veteran outside shooters with the small amount of money we will have. this team will be crap unless we can shoot from the outside. Plus i don’t want us to make another run for one championship. Lets build for multiple ones. .

I don’t know how I got this column. Grace of God, I guess. But anyway, thanks for shedding some light on this topic. You definitely are the guiding light on this forum. In terms of that second trade: You thin the Kings are going to give up Ron Artest when all they’re getting in return is Chris Quinn (an undrafted free agent who is not even ready to be a second-string point guard yet), Smush Parker who is a cancer and hasn’t even played all year, and Kurt Thomas who is 86 years old when they already have Shareef Abdur Rahim and Kenny Thomas???That’s crazy.I understand they’re all expiring deals, but don’t you think the Kings will want someone in return for a player like Artest? And that first one you proposed: Sorry, but nobody is taking Zo because everybody figures he’ll RETIRE (except me, haha). Plus, don’t you realize Jason Kidd makes almost as much money as Shaq? And you think we’ll have room to get a big time free agent ON TOP OF THAT? Where’s the money going to come from???Look, we can all come up with a million trade scenarios and most of them won’t make sense. My whole point is that the Heat need to dump Mark Blount’s contract. I think the Sonics would be a likely candidate not only cuz Ricky Davis could take some of the burden of Durant scoring-wise, but because Blount has been playing pretty well lately. We’ll see. There’s definitely reconstructive surgery to be done. .

Now, as for the BEST possible trade that would make sense for all parties, and would most definitely leave room for all three teams to get better would be this: Heat get Earl Watson, and Ron Artest, Kings get Quinn exp, Parker exp and Kurt Thomas exp. Seattle gets ricky davis exp, earl barron exp, and John Salmons-2 guard of future. Benefits? Heat Address 2 major needs, 1 and 3, and have the expiring contracts of alonzo, and J-will, thats 10 mill. The Sonics get rid of unhappy Watson, fill 2 guard, and maintain expiring contract value. Kings load up on expiring contracts and unload soon to opt out Artest. everyone is happy. .

P.S. even if Seattle COULD do a trade, how would it make sense for them to trade 10,000,000 in expiring contracts for about 9,000,000 in expiring contracts plus an anvil of a contract that is Mark Blount’s? You say becuase they need a shooting guard, so is Ricky Davis the shooting guard of the future? Come on dude, how did you get your own column? .

Alden unlike you I know what I am talking about, I was not going to call you out but that trade is absolutely absurd. Seattle is over the cap and there would be way too much coming in for them. Do a little research. We could pull off a three team trade, using the expiring contract, that would bring us Jason Kidd, and bring Jamaal Magloire’s $4,000,000 expiring contract in, still allowing us to pursue a free agent in the off season. That with a restructure could allow us to go after Ron Artest. The trade is as follows: Heat get J-Kidd, Magloire, Hawks get 2 exp contracts in Zo, and Parker, and Nets get J-Will, Zaza Pachulia, and Ricky Davis. We will then have Wright, Quinn, Magloire, Barron, expiring, and a core of Shaq, Wade, Kidd and Haslem. With room to play. .

D-wade fan: If you’re trying to save money and get under the cap, you don’t trade expiring contracts. You wait until the end of the season when they expire. Now, if you’re trying to get better, than you trade them because they’re appealing to other teams. But if you want to get under the cap, you hold on to them. .

P.S. you are an ignorant moron in saying Haslem sucks and is overrated. He is the most consistent hardest working guy we have outside of Wade, and in fact is highly UNDERrated. Learn a little about basketball before you say something so stupid. .

I definitely agree with getting shaq to restructure, but I definitely do not agree with the sonics trade, they will hold out for a better 2 than Ricky Davis, come on. The only appeal Davis has right now is an expiring ridiculous contract that he will never see again. WHat needs to be done is not at the end of the season, but right now. Barter those expiring contracts we have, Zo, Davis, Parker, J-Will, Wright. There are teams out there who wouldn’t mind clearing cap space. .

Man, wade does nedd to sit out a during the all star games, maybe he jus needs 2 rest a little bit more, as 4 shaq, hes trash now, i don’t think miami has any need 2 have him in da team anymore, jus sayin- holla .

Dwyane Wade do need to sit out during the All Star Games and stuff because he needs to get healtly for the next season so they can prove to people that Miami is THE team to beat.... Shaq...i don’t know about him...maybe he needs to sit out a lil longer. He is always getting hurt and can’t play like he did last year. The reason why Miami ain’t the same team as they were when the won the championship is because the traded the people on the team who was helping Dwyane and Shaq out. The boss should have just kept that team..."WHY FIX IT IF IT ISN’T BROKE"!!!!!! .

The point of that deal is just to free up cap space and get rid of Blount’s contract. It’s not to get talent out of it. .

Yeah, Davis as in Baron Davis. I think the Sonics would take it because they have NOBODY at shooting guard and Davis has an expiring contract. .
