Why Are the LA Lakers Winning? Maybe With Andrew Bynum Injured, We are Going to Find Out

  By Jason Kelly
01.14.2008 - Updated on 01.14.2008

I have been scratching my head at the success of the Lakers this year. What changed so dramatically in the off-season? With all of the drama over the summer, one had to figure things were not going to get better. Yesterday, as I was wondering this, I posted the question over in the HoopsVibe forum to try to get some answers.

There are really only a handful of possibilities. The first is Andrew Bynum’s development. As he develops and decreases the importance of Kwame Brown, only good things can happen. The second is the replacement of Smush Parker with Derek Fisher. I think I may have under-estimated the value of Fisher. The third is Kobe Bryant being more of a “team player.”

Working backwards, Kobe’s shooting percentage is down from the last two years; although, he is on pace to take less shots. As a result, he’s averaging a slightly-more-mortal 27 points-per-game whereas he has been over 30 the last two years. He has always struck me as the type of guy who needs to keep shooting to stay in the game. Are the Lakers really better off with him taking less shots? He’s also averaging about the same in assists and rebounds as in the last two years. I do not see much of an on-court change with him except that he’s shooting worse. Maybe his locker-room demeanor really is the key?

Fisher can be trusted to come up with clutch plays and run the offense, but, statistically speaking, he’s not blowing away Parker’s numbers. Unquestionably, he’s an improvement. Maybe the fact that he does everything a little better ends up being a huge plus. He’s slightly better in points (12.4 to 11.1), assists (3.5 to 2.8), field goal percentage (47% to 43%), three-point percentage (42% to 37%) and turnovers (1.19 per game to 1.87 per game). Were the Lakers just looking for a guy to do all these things better and add that layer of leadership? While Kobe is their best player, has he ever really been their leader?

Bynum’s year has been somewhat surprising. Perhaps it shouldn’t have been. He has been spending all that time with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and was publicly called-out by Bryant. Yesterday, I was of the opinion that his game has given the Lakers the inside-out threat they need – with Fisher and a few other to knock down open shots, Bryant able to do his thing and a threat in the middle the Lakers look tough. Yesterday, Bynum went down with a sprained knee and there is an MRI scheduled for later today. He’s probably going to miss at least a game or two. Maybe this will let us see how the Lakers play without a legitimate post player? If they revert back to the Lakers of a few years past, maybe that is our answer.

Everything, though, keeps pointing back to better team chemistry. Maybe Phil Jackson’s positive front-office relations are making everything harmonious.

so, Jason you finally figured out what we know before? how can you miss the obvious? LAkers are winning because they are good. they will keep winning at least 60% WITH OUT ANDREW. 70% if they sign another big man to help in the middle, even mbenga would help them. Watch out .

Remember the other year, when in the playoffs, the LA Lakers led the Phoenix Suns 3-1, with the dominating play of Kwame. Also against the San Antonio spurs, Kwame can counter against Tim Duncan. Now with Fisher, Farmar and Trevor Ariza, the lakers will keep on rolling wins. .

With Kwame Brown in place of Bynum, the lakers will still be the force to reckon with. Remember, last year, when prior to injuries, the Lakers have beaten all the elite team, with Kwame Brown, Odom and Bryant and Walton.arm of la lakers .

LAKERS WILL SIGN CHRIS WEBBER. With webber, the lakers can have a gud big man as a replacement for bynum. Webber is good. Throughout his years he has averaged over 20 points per game. .

Bynum is down for eight weeks now, and they have a tight upcoming schedule. They play the suns, mavs, spurs, and the cavs. Dont count out the pistons and the nuggets. Tough to beat the elite teams without Bynum. With Bynum, they are just as fast as the suns, but bigger all around. Reason why the suns can’t beat them this year. If they beat the suns without Bynum,,,cool. But don’t expect them to beat the spurs without Bynum. A matchup for Duncan...0. Bynum has the size and speed to keep Duncan in check. Kwame? Not explosive all game enough to keep up with Duncan. He gets to lazy. If Kwame would play a rough, hard, defensive game. Rebound and blockshots. They can win with him. Without Bynum, they have no low post threat. Their inside outside game would be shot, and would be forced to play a jump shooting game. Lamar isn’t a #2 scorer. He’s a great ball handler, and needs the ball to make plays. a good 3 foward he is, but cannot handle the elite power fowards in the game. Bottom line???? They need Bynum in the middle no matter what. My prediction? They go 3-4 the next 7 games. Maybe go 4-3 if Kwame and the bench plays well. I am truly a laker fan and would like to see them win every game. Just like any other loyal fan. But the fact is; if they can’t beat the elite teams and face up against them? What to do. Bynum will truly be missed for the next 8 weeks. My wish? Trade Kwame, Rodmon, Creighton, and a pick for Jermaine O’neal. If they start slipping like last year? Down goes the team. .

From a guy who has TIVO’d every Laker game he could over the last two years here is what I’ve observed. Fischer adds a little bit to every point guard stat and consistent defensive pressure, last year after a similar hot start two starters went down (Odom and Walton) and they are healthy now, and Bynum’s skill has improved but it’s really his conditioning that makes him a lot better than last year. I think they are better off this year with Bynum’s injury then last year with Odom and Walton’s injury. .
