Great Playoff Moments, Day 6: How LeBron Went ’King James’ On Detroit Pistons

April 24 08

Cavaliers’ coach Mike Brown was right:  words can’t describe LeBron James’ play in Cleveland’s 109-107 game five win over Detroit in last year’s Eastern Finals.

It was only a year ago, so I’ll give it my best. Think Michael Jordan sinking six-threes in the first half against Portland during the NBA Finals. Think Magic Johnson tallying 42 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists in game six of the 1979-80 NBA Finals. Think Larry Bird and Dominique Wilkins in the 1988 Eastern playoffs.

James was every bit as masterful. Start with his numbers: an astounding 48 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists. This included 29 of his team’s final 30 points.

Of course, Detroit, one of the NBA’s best defences, knew James was taking every shot come fourth quarter and overtime. It didn’t matter. Not one bit. No scheme, trap, or zone stopped him.

James simply reacted, connecting on several amazing shots. On one occasion he looked like a 6-8 version of The Professor, undressing Billups with a behind-the-back dribble before rifling home a deep jumper.

James also hit a trademark fade from the left. Then he connected over three Pistons from the right. When he wasn’t hitting from the outside, ‘Bron was steamrolling to the basket, putting pressure on the refs to call contact.

James’ game five silenced critics who questioned his past play in crunch time. At just 22 , he established himself as a playoff legend.
