Random Steve Nash Charity Classic Moment: Fred Jones & Ketchup

July 18 07

This weekend I will be covering the Steve Nash Charity Classic in my hometown of Vancouver, Canada. For those who don’t know, the two-time MVP has a foundation that does loads of humanitarian work throughout world.

Some of the NBA’s best will be lacing up their sneakers in an entertaining pick-up run.So the game should be fun. And all the money raised goes towards Nash’s charity, which supports child-focused organizations.

However, the atmosphere around the game should also be entertaining. A fellow reporter, who shall remain nameless, emailed me his ‘memoirs’ of one NBA player at last year’s game:

Funny Fred Jones story. When I went to the Nash charity game, I went with the intention of covering it. They didn’t have enough room for me and the other guy I went with on press row, so they ended up giving us a couple of courtside seats.

Fred Jones for whatever reason never got into the game but did spend time on the bench eating food and using a copious amount of ketchup. It was actually almost as entertaining as the game.

My fellow media-scribe enjoyed the event. And Fred Jones, despite his excessive use of ketchup, was a super-nice guy.
