Got Mayo? 07.23.2007 - Updated on 07.23.2007
 | | | | | | | | | | Recently many sports marketing analyst have been discussing the marketability of Ovinton J’Anthony Mayo, a.k.a O.J. Mayo. He is expected to be a one and done player at USC. If he decides to enter the draft after the season, he’ll be the highest paid player whether he’s the top player or not according to some analyst. O.J. Mayo has been popular since junior high, much like LeBron James, Greg Oden, and Kevin Durant. Before LeBron was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers, he signed a seven year $90 million dollar deal with Nike, with a $10 million dollar signing bonus. He also has major deals with Sprite, Bubblicious, has his own apparel line and other ventures. Kevin Durant recently signed a seven year $60 million dollar deal with Nike, a company that has been affilated with him since 8th grade. His deal also includes a $10 million dollar signing bonus. O.J. is most likely next in line for a mega deal next year if he declares for the draft, with companies like Reebok, Nike, and Adidas trying to obtain his marketing appeal. Analyst say O.J. could command up to $10 million dollars per year on a shoe deal, with another $15 million on other potential sponsorship deals. Some companies already have a head start on O.J. Reebok donated $75,000 a year to his AAU team the D-1 Greyhounds. This season he’ll play for USC a Nike sponsored school, and some analyst have said a silent bidding war is already taking place between Tropicanna and Minute Maid. Chris Rivers VP of grassroots basketball for Reebok said "He has charisma, he walks in a room, you know he’s there. There may be other people who may be as talented as him, but he carries himself likes he’s special." Cindy Taylor an independent marketing firm executive said there are downsides that hurt O.J.’s marketing appeal she said "Many big name companies will be skeptical on wanting to do endorsements with O.J. because when people hear the name O.J. they automatically think of troubled former athlete O.J. Simpson." She also said "Although he has talent companies don’t want to over pay young players coming in, in fear that they don’t live up to the hype like Sebastain Telfair and Gerald Green, and with O.J. possibly going to command $10 million dollars or more, it could pose a problem." Marty Griffin of MG Marketing also feels O.J. may find it difficult to get full value on endorsements he said "Although O.J. Mayo hasn’t had consistent problems with bad behavior, he has been in some trouble, and companies are starting to research and think long and hard with dealing with any athlete, who has had multiple issues surrounding them, no matter how talented, popular, or marketable they are. Whatever happens with Michael Vick will play a huge role in how companies do deals with star players in the future." I can see where Cindy and Marty are coming from, but I disagree with them about O.J. Mayos appeal. Yes he has the initials of troubled former athlete, and yes O.J. has ran into a few problems off the court. But I think companies will look at the pros and cons of signing him, and they’ll see way more pros and pursue to sign him to a deal. From what I’ve been hearing reps are anxious to get Mayo signed to their companies, because he has all the traits they look for popularity, talent, a good personality, and a very marketable name, what more could you ask for? He is a walking slogan, just look at a quote used with his name "Pass the O.J, Hold the Mayo." Companies can have a lot of fun with name the O.J. Mayo. Posted by summer smeeezy on 08.17.2007 | and evrything my mans been caught up in has been absolutely petty! . | Posted by summer smeeezy on 08.17.2007 | and best believe i will be rockin and so will my father everyone of his FINE products . | Posted by summer smeeezy on 08.17.2007 | if my lil jitterbug bluestreak can keep his head on straight unlike alotta foools, and stays focused on his game.. and no more punk refs hatin on him, yah the mans gonna do big thangs as long as he doesnt get caught up in anymore crap! i got love 4 my boy, doesn’t everyone!?! hey o.j — YOU GO BOY! . | Posted by TaSandra Z on 07.24.2007 | I think O.J. Mayo also brings sex appeal, along with his popularity, personality, and talent. He definetly has marketability, I don’t care what his name is. He’s gonna cash in, or atleast he better. If these companies can stick with players that have been in more serious trouble than him. Than he shouldn’t get short handed just because of certain people that came before him . | Posted by CA$H COLEMAN on 07.24.2007 | I THINK MOST BASKETBALL FANS KNOW WHO O.J. MAYO IS, SO WHEN HE’S MARKETING PRODUCTS, I DON’T BELIEVE ALOT OF PEOPLE WOULD MIX HIM UP WITH O.J. SIMPSON. i THINK HIS NAME, PERSONALITY, AND TALENTS, WILL ALLOW HIM TO CASH IN BIG TIME WITH MANY ENDORSEMENTS, FOR SURE . | Posted by From Far away on 07.24.2007 | O.J. could be market for the global areas? Why a talent , with charisma player can`t get a impressive endorsement . I mean he deserve it . . | Posted by Tiffany in (OH) on 07.23.2007 | Players marketing appeal thrive more when their name has a catch phrase to it, like King James (LeBron), or Starbury (Stephon M), even Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson initals became household names. . | Posted by Random Thinker on 07.23.2007 | Go on a search engine and type in O.J. or ask random people what they think of O.J., and the responses you get are alleged killer, and orange juice. So he’s better off either marketing his last name,or going with Ovinton J’Anthony Mayo. It might not sound as glamorious, but it brings less negativety and more appeal than a breakfast drink. . | Posted by Cameron on 07.23.2007 | I guess I’m gonna be in the minority on this one, because I agree with the points Cindy Taylor and Marty Griffin made. O.J. Mayo may find it dificult to get mega endorsements, I believe he’ll get some, but I think many companies will have trouble trying to sell his image. The name O.J. will hurt him, his few off the court incidents may hinder him, and the fact he may come in demanding top dollar may hurt his chances to cash in, on some deals . | Posted by Farmer Jack on 07.23.2007 | If I’m a store, a restaurant, or any other company that his name goes good with, I’d be doing everything I could to sign him for an endorsement. Not only is his name catchy, but his personality can make the sells. As long as he doesn’t get into outrageous trouble to effect his image, O.J. Mayo should get many endorsement deals. . | Posted by paid n full on 07.23.2007 | Straight cash homie! O.J. Mayo is gonna be running to tha bank with all tha endorsements he’s gonna get. Companies would B stupid not to sign him to a deal. When he’s on the court he brings in cash, and when he’s off the court he can still bring in cash. I would want to B his agent, he’s gonna hit tha jackpot! . | Posted by Got Paid? on 07.23.2007 | Man O.J. is gonna get paid, he is a true baller, and all the true ballers got they paper stacked. MJ, A.I, Kobe, LeBron, Kevin Durant, Carmelo, TMac, even Starbury has good marketing appeal and still sellin his shoes for less than $20. O.J. is gonna make atleast $70 million dollars in endorsements. . | Posted by Thomas Lee on 07.23.2007 | With a name like O.J. he has to be good, lol! yeah right companies shouldn’t bank on a name like that. . | Posted by Money Mike on 07.23.2007 | No doubt homies, these comapnies gotta get O.J. Mayo on every product they can. He is gonna bring in alot of money. You can market him in so many ways. Another perfect venture for him besides endorsements, is his own restaurant. Mo Mayo, Mo Money! . | Posted by (T.J.) from the band (playing 4 change) on 07.23.2007 | Cindy and Marty are crazy, if they seriously think O.J. Mayo doesn’t have great marketing appeal. His name is a gold mind, and his talent and personality make it even richer. Until he proves he’s not worht the big money, I say companies better get Mayo. . | Posted by ball till U fall on 07.23.2007 | The Mayonnaise man is gonna get his bread and he gonna spread the mayo name on alot of products. If these big companies got any sense, they’ll take a chance on signing O.J. Mayo to many deals. . | 1 2 Next >
