Oden’s two freshmen teammates, Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook, also declared their eligibility Friday in a statement released by the university. However, unlike Oden, the duo will not hire agents, leaving open the option to return to the Buckeyes program.
Oden, a 2007 First Team All-American and projected No. 1 pick, led Ohio State with 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per contest in his one season at the school. The 7-foot, 280-pound center also led the team with a .616 field goal percentage and was a force on the defensive end, averaging 3.3 blocks per game.
"This is a very tough decision for me," Oden said. "I love OSU and love being a Buckeye, but I also have a great opportunity to take my game to the next level and compete with the best players in the world. I’ve discussed this with family, friends and Coach (Thad) Matta, and I feel the time is right."
Oden was Indiana’s Mr. Basketball in 2006 and led his school to three state title game appearances, winning twice. He was likely headed for the NBA straight out of high school until the league passed an age restriction rule.
Conley, a First Team All-Big Ten selection and a 2006 McDonald’s High School All-American, has been projected by many to be the best point guard available in a deep 2007 draft class.
"This has been an extremely exciting and challenging process for me," said Conley. "It is my life-long dream to play in the NBA. I would like to personally thank Coach Matta and his staff for allowing me the opportunity to play for a great university, rich in history and tradition. I would like to also thank my teammates and the great Buckeye fans for all their support throughout the season."
Conley averaged 11.3 points per game this season, adding 6.1 assists and a 51.8 shooting percentage.
"I treasured my time at OSU and our run during the 2007 Tournament, but I want to continue to challenge myself further," said Cook, who averaged 9.8 points per game. "I know what I’m capable of and I’m confident I can compete at the professional level."
The trio led the Buckeyes to the NCAA title game this past season. Ohio State lost to the Florida Gators, who repeated as national champions with an 84-75 win.
Conley and Cook have until June 18 to withdraw their names from the NBA Draft and maintain their college eligibility at Ohio State University.
