Josh McRoberts Robs Himself

Josh McRoberts Robs Himself

Now I bet people are saying what is Lance talking about now, well you’re about to find out. Duke sophomore, Josh McRoberts the 6’11, 245 pound frontcout player, has declared for the draft and signed on with agent Arn Tellem, assuring everyone he has no intention of coming back. Again, as I have expressed in previous articles about big guys leaving too early, I think this might be a costly mistake.

Had Josh stayed for another year or two, I truly believe he has the talent to be a top 5 pick. But by leaving early he is a mid to late first rounder, which isn’t the end of the world, but I feel he is losing out by being in this years draft. Josh had a struggling second year in college, which hurt his stock, he was very inconsistent this year. Had he come back for atleast one more year, he could really develop as a dominant big man, and become more NBA ready. No matter where you’re drafted at in the first round, you make decent money, so that’s not too big of a factor, but he could possibly lose a couple million dollars, if he falls between 20-30.

Josh has great perimeter skills for a player his height. He finds the open man with his court vision and passing skills that are better than most point guards. He can beat you off the dribble. He has a nice Kareem hook shot from both hands. He is also very athletic. Josh also has some holes in his game, like defense he really needs to improve on that, and he is a very average rebounder, who doesn’t always play well vs big men. He doesn’t show alot of effort to box out. Josh isn’t a consistent scorer, he can mentally drift off during the game at times, he doesn’t like to make too much contact on the floor. Josh also has an Antonie Walker mentality when it comes to three pointers, he just wants to jack them up, even though he’s not very good at it.

So my point is if Josh is this inconsistent at a young age in college, what makes him think, it will change by going to the NBA this year? It’s going to take some time for him to develop into an everyday big man, he has to get his mind ready for it, before he can even truly make a difference. If and when Josh McRoberts becomes a mature player, he has Chris Webber like potential, but for now he’s not even at his own potential, he is trying to move ahead to fast, and he may or may not regret it.

Lance you totally called it right. Josh McRoberts did Rob himself he fell all the way to the 37th pick. Most likely next year he would’ve been a top 10. Good luck J-Rob you’re gonna need it buddy! .

Ha Ha you S.O.B that’s what you get for leaving early. You slipped to the mid second round. See what happens when you THINK you’re better than you really are. Is the taste in your mouth sour? I’m sure it is. Get ready to be a bench rider for your career. Scouts and teams seen right through you. You could’ve been a real special player had you played your cards right. .

Let’s be clear about one thing: McRoberts was a disappointment. As a top 5 recruit out of high school Duke fans expected more offensive consistency out of him after his Freshmen year. I can’t remember how many times I watched McRoberts get pushed around down low and settle for an off-balance shot. I wouldn’t put him in the same category as Shav Randolph, but Josh performed well below the standards set by Duke’s other primary big men in recent memory. This was even more obvious in light of Tyler Hansbrough’s rapid development into a star over the same time period. .

Reading through these comments is ironic with all the Duke fans complaining about McSofty being a crybaby, of course he went to Duke and had a great teacher! No one should be surprised also who ever claimed magatte as a Duke player ought to be proud of losing your runner up banner for his recruiting violations. .

I think he is stupid for leaving duke w/o proper coaching from one of the best coaches ever he has potential to be the best player in the ncaa .

Josh McRoberts is a rare talent on the floor. He is athletic and can get up and down the floor well. I also do believe that he should have stayed at least one more year at Duke. I think he will hold his own in the NBA but i think if he stayed at Duke he would have been better off .

I like Josh, but he is not ready for this move. Scoring, post game and footwork needs serious attention, along with getting a consistent 10 to 15 foot jumper (spot up and fade away) will give him a match-up advantage. His body, not yet mature where it needs to be. What type of player will he be? No one knows, and therefore his stock will fall—the NBA already has a Luke Walton (plus Luke is a better shooter). Further, with Duke’s team maturing from last year, he will get this chance to focus on low post moves. Yes, he can rebound, dribble, and pass, but needs to come up with the big buckets down the stretch. One more year will shut me up. I have concern for Duke basketball as of late, they are not getting athletes and busting on players they figure will not jump to the NBA so quickly, but those said players instead become mediocre. This is obviously a no-win path. Where is the put away dunker and low post killer to put a game out of reach? Even a raw athlete will shine in their program eventually. They need to develop depth, they get tired with 2 minutes left and lose games they once controlled. Pocious has a scorers’ mentality, Coach K needs to bring this out of him and let him make his mistakes. If Henderson is not a star next year, it is a sign that Duke basketball has big internal problems. Bring in Laettner as an assistant, he is their turning point. Will they get Patterson? .

The point of the article was correct. Josh is not ready for the NBA. But the reasons given seem out of line for the most part. Josh never developed a consistent shot from anywhere on the court. Its unfair to say he shot too many threes, I hardly remember him taking one. Where his lunch will get eaten in the NBA is on defense-two NC State fresmen scored inside on him at will in the ACC tournament. That being said, its his life and he has every right to go pro now if that’s what he wants to do. Duke fans should support his decision. For those who remember far enough back, ask Donald Williams of UNC what staying for his senior year did for him (a sure 1st rounder as a junior, he went undrafted as a senior after a poor year). These players don’t owe fans a thing. Duke (and all major conference schools) are making a fortune off their players. We owe it to the players to support them in decisions they make about their future. .

Coach K doesn’t know how to develop big men? Let’s see...Carlos Boozer, Elton Brand, Christian Laettner, Danny Ferry, Cherokee Parks, Shelden Williams...I see what you mean. That’s not an entire list of all-american big men. Good point. .

Hey, all you people who claim to be duke fans but are ripping on coach k and josh mcroberts are a joke. Josh has given Duke a lot and I’m just sad to see him go because he is my favorite player and if he would’ve stayed, we would’ve won a national title within the next two years (And trust me, I know what I’m talking about because Duke has the best recruiting cla-------coming in and that’ll be 2 of the last 3 years). And Josh did rob himself because who cares about the second contract, it’ll be even bigger if he is a top 5 pick and plus he’ll get the big bucks right away. .

Been a Duke fan for many years, and I am very ,very happy to see him leave. For someone who came out of high school so very highly recruited,he turned into a big bust(another Shavlik Randolph)Good bye good riddens,I hope he drops to a lower than projected draft pick. The only reason he looked good last year is because he had JJ and Shelden there. .

BFD....... Were you alive when carlos was drafted? He was a complete player, LOL ? Are you out of your mind? If he was so complete why did he fall to the 35th pick in the 2nd round? My only comparison between josh and carlos is the many people doubting their decision.... Carlos has worked out well and is making alot of teams sick each night he plays them for not drafting him....Carlos was considered overweight because of a summer of McDonalds day after day, his hands was questioned, couldnt face the basket most scouts thought he couldnt even get his shots off in the NBA because of poor arc...At the time most of this was true but what makes a player is his desire and maybe josh can find that in the NBA by sitting and watching instead of playing....Coach K wont help josh get better maybe if he recruited better big guys and a few athletic gaurds josh could play foward around the rim instead of running the team from the top of the key...his numbers would be alot better if he could play his regular position... .

It really caught me off guard when Josh declared. He talked after the VCU loss like a player who intended to come back and avenge the loss. I agree with some people that he didn’t develop as much as I would have liked him to and the yelling at his teamates wasn’t the greatest thing to do, but who are we to know what he was yelling about? Josh didn’t develop enough low post moves to be a proficent post player and his defense could definately be stepped up as well. I don’t think he is ready to play at the next level and I don’t want to see him end up riding the bench like JJ Redick who is a great player completely disregarded by his coach. Josh should have stayed for at least another year but I can’t change it. I wish Josh the bes of luck in the rest of his career and will support him wherever he goes. Hopefully he can prove me, and everyone else wrong and be a great player in the NBA. .

I agree that Josh should never be confused with Antoine Walker. Say what you want about Josh, but being a ball hog who is in love with his outside shot and thinks he should be "the man" describes Walker, not McRoberts. Josh needed more experience on a team that needs him to score before going to the league, where he will now be relegated to scoring off of fast breaks and rebounds. Unfortunately for him, Josh goes down with Shav Randolph as the two biggest disappointments in Duke history. .

Is this a hoops web site or the Lance fan club? Not Quite Right said he agreed with most of what Lance said, but correctly pointed out that Lance’s comparison of Josh to Anoine Walker is a bad one. Josh averaged less than 1 three point shot attempt every two games! The knock on Josh is he wasn’t agressive enough on the offensive end and didn’t look for his own shot. Pointing out an error in Lance’s argument does not make somebody a Duke apologist or stupid. I guess we have to find something to argue about because just about everyone agrees McRoberts should stay in college at least another year. .

Whoever wrote that Duke players stink in the NBA has his head p his you know what. Grant Hi;; was excellent until he hurt his ankle. Luol Deng, Elton Brand, Corey Magette and Carlos Boozer are all leaders on their tea,s in scoring. Dunleavey, Ewing, Duhon , Dahntay Jones Battier are all solid role players. What other college produces as many players? I do agree that Coach K has gotten gun shy after losing so many players early. However, Pauus is a good point guard and Gerald Henderson will be very good. Josh McRoberts, good riddance. Big whiner who will be too slow in the NBA with no moves in the low post. .

I would hope that Josh would get a kick out of all the "speculation by experts" about his ability. All the way to the bank .
