Derrick Byars is 6’7, 225 pounds and is a complete player with a lot of athleticism.
He has an NBA ready body and can handle a lot of contact. He is a good finisher at the basket, is a good rebounder, and plays very tough. He can handle the ball real well, has good court vision and passing skills. Derrick is a very unselfish player, but he is a great scorer. He has a nice consistent three point shot, has a quick jumper, and has good lateral quickness. He has good defensive skills keeping his man in front of him, he has a high basketball IQ, and knows how to take control of a game.
Derrick could improve his mid-range game, he can become too focused on shooting threes. He can get careless with the ball and should protect it better. He needs to improve his mid range game, and make better shot selections. On defense he likes to reach in a lot and it’s becoming a bad habit. He has a slow first step, and he can be inconsistent with his intensity on the floor.
Despite some of his weaknesses that can be corrected quickly, Derrick is one of the most complete players in the draft to me. He could be like a Shane Battier type player in the NBA. Derrick could go anywhere from the mid first round to early second round in the draft.
