Talking with Some NBA Draftees By Lance Walton

Here are some brief interviews with a few players who were drafted a couple days ago.
Michael Beasley
Question: What’s going through your mind now that you’re drafted?
Answer: Just pure excitement man! I’m ready to get on the court and play the game I love, with my new team the Miami Heat.
Question: You’re probably tried of this being brought up. But how do you feel when people question your attitude?
Answer: It’s nothing to me. I’m a pretty good guy on and off the court. I’m young and I’m going to make mistakes. Nobody is totally perfect. We just gotta learn from the mistakes we make. I don’t see what’s wrong with a positive attitude.
Question: Do you think Miami is a good spot for you?
Answer: No doubt. This team won a championship just 3 seasons ago. We got one of the top players in the league with D-Wade, and an all-star with the Matrix, and when you add me, I believe I can contribute right away and help turn this team around.
Question: Did you ever feel you wouldn’t be a top 2 selection?
Answer: Yeah, it started to go through my head that the Bulls or the Heat would pass up on me, and go in a direction.
DJ Augustin
Question: How do you feel about being drafted to the Bobcats?
Answer: I feel pretty good. I believe I can come in and help out the team, anyway they need me to.
Question: I’m sure you know by now that Larry Brown can be tough on his point guards. Are you ready for the challenge?
Answer: Well I played for coach Barnes at Texas, and he could be pretty tough at times. When you have one of the greatest coaches of all time in Larry Brown, you have to feel he’s only going to make you better as a player and person.
Question: Was there ever a thought in your mind, that you could be teammates with Kevin Durant on the SuperSonics?
Answer: I knew coming into the draft that anything was possible. It would’ve been cool to play with him again, but I’m happy to be drafted and getting the chance to play in the NBA.
DeAndre Jordan
Question: Are you surprised that you slipped to the second round?
Answer: Yeah, I’m a little disappointed, you never really know where you could end up, but I didn’t expect to fall that far.
Question: So are you happy to be a Clipper?
Answer: Most definitely, I think this could be a good place for me. Playing and learning behind great players like Chris Kaman and Elton Brand, will be a fun experience for me.
Question: Do you regret coming out of school after just one season?
Answer: No not really. I felt confident in my abilities to play at the next level. I just have to look forward, not back.
Question: What are you looking forward to most as a pro?
Answer: Just being able to play with the best players in the world. Helping my team will ball games, and learning about the league with my fellow rookie teammates Eric Gordon and Mike Taylor.
Danilo Gallinari
Question: How did you feel about being booed by New York fans?
Answer: I was told it was a good chance it would happen. I guess I’m going to have to go out and play hard and do the best I can to help the Knicks improve. I can understand they don’t know who I am and how I play. I’m happy to be in New York.
Question: Are you looking forward to playing for Mike D’Antoni?
Answer: I look forward to playing for him, he is a great coach, with a great system that makes basketball fun, and gets results. I think we’ll have a positive relationship.
Question: How long do you think it will take you to adapt not only to New York, but life in the NBA as well?
Answer: I think I’m able to adapt pretty quick, it will be a big learning experience for me. I hope it will take less than 2 years to get comfortable to my new life. |

on 06.30.2008 | I agree MacBeth: These young players have to much egos. Like J.B.S: said there are players who think they’re better than they really are. Donte Greene, Mario Chalmers, and the players you guys mentioned, turned down a lot of workouts with late 1st rd teams, becuase they’re head was too big feeling I’ll be gone by then. And next thing you know they slip out the 1st rd and lose guaranteed $. Hopefully this was a humbling experience for them in they’re first career decisions. . | Posted by

on 06.29.2008 | The players with Big Egos are the one’s that drop. DeAndre Jordan, Chris Douglas-Roberts. Undraftees Jamont Gordon, Davon Jefferson. Michael Beasley has a big ego, but who’s gonna pa-------on the best player in the draft? Many of these young players who haven’t done much of nothing need to humble themselves, it could do them a lot of good career wise . | Posted by

on 06.28.2008 | Michael Beasley is a cocky dude. He is already starting to rub me the wrong way. I hope he goes through some humbling experiences early on. DeAndre Jordan, seems like he doesn’t want to admit he may have made a bad choice. He has to feel salty just a lil bit. I think D.J. Augustin will do just fine in Charlotte, that could be a good spot for him. Danilo Gallinari is going to need more than 2 years to adapt to both situations. I would be shocked if he mastered both by 2010. . |
