NBA Game Summary - Dallas at Atlanta

Atlanta, GA (Basketball News) - Dirk Nowitzki posted a double-double with 27 points and 13 rebounds while Jason Terry provided a perimeter presence with 26 points, as Dallas rolled past Atlanta, 98-83, at Philips Arena.

Jerry Stackhouse contributed 16 points, Marquis Daniels donated 14 points and Erick Dampier tallied 10 points and pulled down 10 boards for Dallas, which has won two of its last three contests. The road warriors also improved to 24-10 away from home and will visit Detroit, Cleveland and Orlando to finish the road trip.

Al Harrington led the Hawks with 19 points, Joe Johnson scored 17 points and Marvin Williams posted his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 boards for Atlanta, which has lost three in a row and seven of its last eight games.

Atlanta went almost six minutes without a field goal during the first period, and Dallas built a substantial edge. Josh Childress’ free throw with 7:19 left tied the game at 8-8, but by the time Williams converted a layup with 1:45 remaining, Dallas had built a double-digit lead.

During the Hawks’ long cold spell, Dallas ripped off 12 consecutive points. Terry drained two jumpers to start the stretch and Rawle Marshall drained a pair of free throws to cap the spurt.

Dallas held a 24-10 advantage after one stanza.

The Mavericks extended their lead to 33-13 during the early stages of the second quarter, as Dampier’s short jumper and Stackhouse’s two free throws opened the 20-point lead with 9:25 on the clock.

Johnson’s three-point play with 1:13 left trimmed the deficit to 47-33, but Nowitzki tallied four of the half’s final six points. The forward used his size to shake free and drained a tough fadeaway to make the score 51-35 at the half.

Atlanta used a 9-0 burst during the third stanza to get within 65-56. Harrington drained a long-distance jumper, Williams followed up a Harrington miss with a layup, Johnson buried a three and Josh Smith worked down low for a layup with 2:37 left.

Dallas slowly restored order, scoring the final five points of the period to hold a 76-61 edge. Terry scored them all, converting a three-point play and just beating the buzzer with a layup.

The Mavericks’ lead ballooned to 87-66 on Dampier’s layup with 8:34 remaining. Smith’s emphatic slam cut the deficit to 91-75 with 3:42 on the clock, but the Hawks got no closer until Royal Ivey drained a jumper at the buzzer.

Smith scored 11 points in the loss...Dallas converted 23-of-26 from the charity stripe...The Hawks fell to 14-20 at home...Dallas won for the first time in its last three trips to Atlanta...The Mavericks swept the season series, posting an 87-78 home victory on November 17.
