San Antonio, TX (Basketball News) - Bruce Bowen scored 15 points to lead a balanced scoring attack and help the San Antonio Spurs pound the Memphis Grizzlies, 97-75, at the SBC Center.
Beno Udrih netted 14 and Manu Ginobili added 13 for the Spurs, who rebounded from Wednesday’s loss in Utah to win for the for the fourth time in five games. Tony Parker recorded 10 points and nine assists and Brent Barry chipped in 10 points in the win.
San Antonio’s Tim Duncan was playing in his second game since returning from the injured list and ended with 11 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes.
The Spurs, who have already clinched the Southwest Division title, are currently second in the Western Conference standings.
Memphis continued its late-season slide and once again failed to clinch a postseason spot. The Grizzlies, who have dropped three straight, just need a win to lock up the final postseason berth in the Western Conference. They now hold a 1 1/2 game lead over Minnesota with two games left on their schedule.
Pau Gasol was the lone Grizzlies’ scorer in double figures with 17 points. Memphis shot just 33 percent from the floor in the loss.
The first quarter was tight throughout and San Antonio held a 21-15 edge at the end of 12 minutes. The Spurs would add to their lead in the second and eventually held a 41-25 cushion after Nazr Mohammed made a layup with 3:32 remaining. San Antonio would then carry a 48-35 edge into the locker room.
Gasol led all scorers with 15 points at the half, while Barry paced the Spurs with nine.
San Antonio built on its 13-point edge in the third quarter and led 73-55 at the end of the period.
The Spurs would blow the game open with a 20-9 stretch to begin the final quarter. Udrih hit a trio of three-pointers in the run and Tony Massenburg’s dunk made it 93-64 with 5:35 left. San Antonio would cruise to the victory from there.
