03.20.2006

New York, NY (Basketball News) - Dwyane Wade scored 30 points and dished out nine assists to lead the Miami Heat over the New York Knicks, 111-100, at Madison Square Garden.

Jason Williams added 21 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Heat, who have won five in a row. Shaquille O’Neal tallied 18 points for Miami, which has won 15 of 16 overall and clinched a playoff spot with the victory.

Eddy Curry had 18 points and Jamal Crawford 16 to lead New York, which had a modest two-game win streak halted. Jalen Rose tallied 14 points and Jerome James had 13 for the Knicks, who never led in the game.

The Heat broke the game open in the third. After the Knicks tied the game for the first time since the opening tip, Curry’s bucket made it a 51-51 game with just over two minutes gone in the quarter.

However, Williams drained a three-pointer nearly 40 seconds later to restore the Heat’s lead and spark an 8-0 run that gave Miami a 59-51 advantage.

Later, Wade hit 1-of-2 free throws to extend to a 68-59 cushion with 4 1/2 minutes to go and the Heat cruised into the fourth with the same nine-point lead, 78-69.

New York never made it a game over the final 12 minutes and Miami cruised to the win.

The Knicks had defeated the league’s best team the Detroit Pistons, 105-103, on Friday night.

Miami ran out to a 29-23 lead after one quarter and extended to a 12-point advantage, 39-27, when Williams hit a free throw a little less than five minutes into the second.

New York rallied to get within one point later in the second, using a 15-4 run to make it a 43-42 game. Rose’s three-pointer capped the surge with just under three minutes to play and New York went into the break down 49-46.

"We controlled the game for the most part except for the end of the second quarter," said Miami head coach Pat Riley. "Alonzo had a huge impact on the game defensively. He gave us a defensive lift when we needed it."

Alonzo Mourning had eight blocks for the Heat.

"Both of those guys are beasts," said Marbury of O’Neal and Mourning.

Udonis Haslem had 11 points for the Heat, who improved to 19-14 on the road this season...The Knicks fell to 13-20 at home...New York fell to 2-2 on a five-game homestand...Stephon Marbury had 12 points and David Lee had 11 points and eight rebounds...NY’s Malik Rose left the game with a sprained right ankle.
