NBA Game Summary - Philadelphia at Atlanta

03.5.2005

Atlanta, GA (Basketball News) - Allen Iverson had 33 points, six assists and made a game-saving steal in the final seconds, as the Philadelphia 76ers grabbed a 98-97 victory over the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena.

Marc Jackson converted two free throws with 1.2 seconds left to give the lead to the Sixers, winners of two straight and three of four. Chris Webber added 18 points and eight rebounds to allow Philadelphia to win its second straight on the road. Jackson had 11 of his 13 points in the decisive fourth, as Philadelphia shot 17-for-17 from the charity stripe in the final 12 minutes en route to the win.

Al Harrington’s 19 points paced the Hawks. Josh Childress added 16 points while Tyronn Lue chipped in with 13. Atlanta has now lost 11 straight games.

The final minutes of this game saw several lead changes.

With the Sixers up 96-95, Jackson missed a layup, but Tom Gugliotta missed a jumper that could have given the Hawks the lead with a minute remaining.

After a Webber miss, Lue was whistled for pushing off on Iverson while driving the lane with 40 seconds left. But Webber threw a pass away with 22.8 seconds left, giving the Hawks a chance to take the last shot for a chance to win it.

Atlanta elected to take the quick shot, and Gugliotta nailed an 18-footer from the right side to push the Hawks in front, 97-96, with 17.3 seconds remaining.

Iverson missed a jumper, but the ball went out of bounds off Childress, giving the visitors another chance.

Iverson took a pass from Webber, and immediately fell down and lost the ball. He had the presence of mind to pick it up, dribble into the lane and find an open Jackson, who missed a layup but was fouled with 1.2 seconds left. Jackson calmly drained both free throws to put the Sixers in front 98-97.

"(Iverson) has the agility of a cat," said Sixers’ head coach Jim O’Brien. "For him to be able to fall, avoid the guy stealing the ball, get up, penetrate and then make the appropriate pass to (Jackson) at the end of the game. That and Marc’s clutch foul shooting was really great."

Iverson then stole the ensuing inbounds pass to end it. It was his sixth steal of the contest.

The first quarter was a nip-and-tuck affair, with the Sixers taking a 27-25 lead into the second frame. An Obinna Ekezie hoop with just under six minutes left in the first half gave the Hawks their biggest lead, at 42-37. Atlanta eventually took a 50-48 lead into the intermission, after outscoring the 76ers 25-21 in the second quarter.

Harrington led a balanced scoring attack in the first half for the Hawks with a dozen points on 4-of-5 shooting. The Sixers, playing their fourth game in five nights, allowed Atlanta to shoot 53 percent from the field in the opening 24 minutes. Predrag Drobnjak added 10.

The Sixers were led by Iverson, who had 21 points, while Webber added 10.

Kyle Korver nailed a three-pointer and Webber dropped in two as the Sixers forged ahead 53-50 in the opening minute of the third.

But Atlanta controlled the action the rest of the way in the third quarter, and led by as many as seven points, at 72-65, with three minutes left. Atlanta eventually took a 74-69 lead into the final 12 minutes.

Boris Diaw nailed a field goal to put Atlanta up 79-73 with 9 1/2 minutes left in the game. But a 13-3 Philadelphia run, capped by two free throws by Marc Jackson, put the Sixers up 86-82 just 3 1/2 minutes later.

Ekezie corralled a career-high nine rebounds for the Hawks, who outrebounded the Sixers 50-35. Gugliotta added a season-high eight caroms...Philadelphia took two out of three meetings this season...Iverson was 13-of-13 from the charity stripe.
