NBA Game Summary - Philadelphia at Washington

01.16.2006

Washington, DC (Basketball News) - Caron Butler scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13-shooting as Washington buried Philadelphia, 104-76, at the MCI Center.

Gilbert Arenas added 22 points, five rebounds and 12 assists for the Wizards, who won for the fourth consecutive time. Antawn Jamison chipped in with 21 points and 10 boards while Brendan Haywood also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

"We just went out there and played our game," Arenas said. "Antawn sit shots, I tried to get to the free throw line and i tried to get Chris Webber and some of the other big players out of the game by attacking the rim."

Andre Iguodala led the Sixers, who lost for the second time in three games, with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Allen Iverson pitched in with 17 points and eight assists while Samuel Dalembert had nine points, seven rebounds and five blocks in the loss.

"We couldn’t stop them," said Iverson. "We didn’t get anything from our starters or our guys off the bench. We got beat in every aspect of the game tonight."

Kyle Korver, the Sixers third-leading scorer, was held scoreless in 28 minutes of action.

The Wizards exploded with a 35-17 third quarter to blow the game open. Butler, who abused the slow-footed Korver all day, buried a three from the left corner to give Washington a 82-60 advantage with under a minute to go in the frame.

The Sixers would not respond in the final quarter.

Donell Taylor’s jumper from the right wing extended the Wizards lead to 25, 95-70, with under five minutes remaining.

A driving layup by Awvee Storey gave Washington their largest lead, 104-73, with 27 ticks left.

"Today was a collective effort," said Wizards coach Eddie Jordan. "We are riding the momentum that we started three games ago. Caron really did a good job defensively. He is really embracing the role that we assigned him as the defensive captain."

The Wizards took advantage of the Sixers’ porous defense and raced out to a 31-24 edge after one quarter.

Philadelphia tightened things up a bit in the second frame and closed the gap to two, 47-45, at the half. Butler paced Washington with 14 points while Iverson matched him with 14 for the Sixers.

The Sixers scored just 31 points in the second half...The Wizards dominated the boards with a 55-40 edge...Philadelphia shot just 33.3 percent from the floor on the day...Antonio Daniels also reached double figures with 10 points for the Wizards...Washington is 10-8 in its arena this season...Philadelphia, which will kick off a two-game homestand on Wednesday versus New Jersey, is just 6-13 away from home this season.
