The team began the season by winning six of its first seven games, but has slipped to 7-9 after a recent skid.
Adubato finishes with a record of 100-79 since taking over the team for the 1999 season. Under his tutelage, New York won Eastern Conference titles in 1999, 2000 and 2002.
"We thank Richie for his commitment to the Liberty," said vice president and general manager Carol Blazejowski. "He played a big part in our past success, most notably guiding us to three Eastern Conference championships. But we felt at this time the team needed to go in a different direction."
Assistant Jeff House was also released.
