Blazers top Hawks in OT

03.23.2007

Atlanta, GA (Basketball News) - LaMarcus Aldridge scored six of his 27 points in overtime and ended with 14 rebounds, as the Portland Trail Blazers rallied to beat the Atlanta Hawks, 102-100, at Philips Arena.

Brandon Roy added 23 points and nine assists for Portland, which has won three straight games since its four-game losing streak. Jarrett Jack scored 17 of his 18 points in the second half and overtime for the Trail Blazers, who outrebounded Atlanta 53-43.

"They came out early and played with a lot of energy and we really couldn’t match it," said Roy. "Coach came in at half and said we had to play harder. If we can play harder we got a chance to win this game."

Salim Stoudamire scored a career-high 37 points, 23 of which came in the second half and overtime for the Hawks, who have lost four their last five games. Josh Childress finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Josh Smith added 17 points and 11 boards for Atlanta, which has lost 10 of its last 11 games against Portland.

Trailing 88-85, Roy drilled a three with 17.3 seconds left in the fourth quarter, tying the score at 88. Atlanta then had a chance to win it, but Zaza Pachulia’s missed a jumper with two seconds remaining. Portland then had a chance to win out of a timeout. Roy caught the ball on the baseline but missed a long jumper at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.

Aldridge took over in the extra session, scoring six of the Blazers’ first eight points, putting Portland on top 96-92 with 1:38 to go.

Portland then made six straight free throws down the stretch. Stoudamire’s triple at the buzzer accounted for the final margin.

"I’d rather get zero points and win," said Stoudamire. "My 37 (points) meant nothing to me. I’m actually mad because it was against my home team. I wanted to beat them really bad."

The Hawks, who led 20-15 after one quarter, went on a 10-0 run to start the second and led 30-15 early in the second frame.

Portland was able to cut the lead to seven, 47-40 at the intermission.

The Hawks continued their comeback in the third stanza and trailed just 66-64 heading into the final quarter.

Smith connected on a three with 22.6 seconds left in the fourth, to give Atlanta a three point lead, 88-85.
