Boykins, Bucks beat Bobcats

01.15.2007

Charlotte, NC (Basketball News) - Earl Boykins continued to make an impression with Milwaukee, as he netted 30 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out four assists to help lift the Bucks past Charlotte, 99-91.

Boykins was acquired by the Bucks last week in a trade with Denver, and had 11 points and 11 rebounds in his Milwaukee debut last Friday. That was the last game Milwaukee had played after its tilt with the Hornets was postponed on Saturday after New Orleans was unable to leave Oklahoma City because of bad weather.

Andrew Bogut had 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Bucks, who ended a five- game losing streak. Charlie Bell and Ruben Patterson each had 10 points in the win.

Matt Carroll scored 20 points in the first half, but only knocked down a pair of free throws in the second for the Bobcats, who had a season-high three-game winning streak snapped.

Emeka Okafor chipped in with 17 points and 12 rebounds for Charlotte, which has never beaten Milwaukee in its franchise’s short history. The Bucks have captured the eight all-time meetings between the two clubs. Raymond Felton had 14 points and nine assists in defeat.

Tied at 86 in the fourth, Boykins drilled a three-pointer with 4:03 left to put the Bucks up. Okafor hit two from the line to make it a one-point game, but Bell quickly countered at the other end to give Milwaukee a 92-88 advantage.

Charlotte’s Primoz Brezec then turned the ball over, and both clubs missed their next shot attempts before a Bogut layup padded the Bucks’ lead to six with 1:46 remaining.

Out of timeouts, Felton missed on a layup try, and Okafor grabbed the rebound and was fouled. The big man only hit 1-of-2 from the line, though, to make it 94-89 with 1:39 on the clock.

Okafor made up for his miss as he came up with a steal, but Felton was whistled for an offensive foul, and Brian Skinner converted a jumper to move Milwaukee’s lead to seven with under a minute to play.

Adam Morrison missed two tries on the other end for the Bobcats and Boykins iced the game with a pair of shots from the line with 30 ticks left.

Milwaukee opened up the third by netting 13 of the frame’s first 15 points to take a 65-53 lead, with Bell’s jumper accounting for the 12-point edge with 6:46 remaining.

A 7-0 run by Charlotte later in the frame cut its deficit to 67-64 with under 3 1/2 minutes remaining, and the Bucks led by a slim margin of 76-74 heading into the fourth.

A jumper by Okafor put the Bobcats ahead 80-76 early in the fourth, but an 8-2 spurt for the Bucks put them ahead 84-82 with 5:46 to play.

Milwaukee hit its first five shots in the game and led 11-5 early on. Charlotte responded with a 9-2 run to go in front 14-13. The Bobcats led 27-26 after the first.

A jumper by Carroll gave the Bobcats a 42-37 edge midway though the second frame. However, Milwaukee netted the next seven points — the last five coming from Bogut — to go in front by two.

The Bucks eventually carried a 52-51 advantage into the half.

Game Notes

Skinner ended with six points and seven rebounds...Morrison had 11 off the bench...Milwaukee shot 46.9 percent from the floor, while Charlotte hit on just 39.5 percent of its shots...The Bobcats haven’t won four straight games since ending the 2005-06 season with four consecutive wins...Charlotte fell to 1-1 on its current three-game homestand.
