Clippers bring back Cassell

07.12.2006

Los Angeles, CA (Basketball News) - The Los Angeles Clippers re-signed guard Sam Cassell to a multi-year contract on Wednesday. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released.

Cassell averaged 17.2 points and 6.3 assists in 78 games last season with the Clippers, who finished with their best record in 31 seasons and came within one game of the Western Conference Finals.

In 12 playoff games last season, Cassell averaged 18.0 points, 5.8 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game.

"Sam was an integral part of our success last season," said Clippers vice president of basketball operations Elgin Baylor. "We are very happy that he will be with us for the next two years."

Cassell has scored 16.3 points and added 6.2 assists in 880 games with Houston, Phoenix, Dallas, New Jersey, Milwaukee, Minnesota and the Clippers. He’s won a pair of championships with the Rockets in 1994 and 1995.

"It is a great feeling to have Sam back under contract," said Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy. "He was such a vital part to our maturation and success last year. We are very confident he will continue to provide the leadership needed to progress to our ultimate goal of winning an NBA championship."
