"There were numerous reasons for extending John’s contract," said Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson, "but at the top of my list were his performances both academically and athletically. He is graduating student- athletes and winning basketball games, and that is exactly what we asked him to do when John was hired."
Calipari took over as Memphis’ head coach in the 2000-01 season and has compiled an 81-35 record. During his 12 years as a collegiate coach, which also included a stint with Massachusetts, the 44-year-old is 274-106.
"I would like to thank the administration at the University of Memphis for the unbelievable support they have given me and my coaching staff and for the great opportunity that has been extended to my family," Calipari stated.
