Scott, who coached at Princeton for the last two years, will take over a Denver program which finished 4-25 this past season.
It will be a return to the Rockies for the Princeton graduate. Before his stint with the Tigers, Scott coached four seasons at Air Force, going 51-63, but was named Mountain West Conference coach of the year after a 22-7 campaign in 2004 and an NCAA tournament berth.
"Today is a new day for the University of Denver and its men’s basketball program," vice chancellor for athletics and recreation and Ritchie Center operations Peg Bradley-Doppes said. "We’re thrilled to name Joe Scott as our new men’s basketball coach. Throughout college basketball, programs continue to search for the next Joe Scott. Today we are excited to bring the original back to Colorado. Joe represents everything that we were looking for in a leader. He’s a strong recruiter, a winner and a tireless worker who is committed to bringing out the best in his student-athletes on the court and in the classroom."
The 41-year-old replaces Terry Carroll, who left the university unexpectedly in December and was fired on March 3. Carroll compiled a 79-99 mark in six seasons with the Pioneers.
