03.19.2005 - Updated on 03.19.2005

Dallas, TX (Basketball News) - Dallas Mavericks head coach Don Nelson announced his resignation Saturday morning, according to The Dallas Morning News. Assistant Avery Johnson will take over as head coach on an interim basis.

Nelson is stepping down for family and other reasons, but will remain as general manager of the team. The Mavs are expected to make an announcement during a Saturday afternoon press conference.

The 64-year-old Nelson posted a 339-251 record in eight seasons with Dallas. He has coached in the NBA for 26-plus seasons, posting a career mark of 1,190-880. The product of Iowa is one of just three coaches in the history of the league to accumulate 1,000 career victories.

Johnson has coached 13 games this season when Nelson was out for various reasons. Dallas is currently 42-22 and second in the Southwest Division.
