Deron Williams has stepped up for the Jazz

01.29.2007

(Basketball News) - Starting point guard Deron Williams is having an All-Star type season for the Utah Jazz, who own a five-game lead over the second place Denver Nuggets in the Northwest Division.

Originally selected out of Illinois with the third overall pick by Utah in the 2005 NBA Draft, Williams is averaging 17.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and a team- best 9.2 assists per game. The Illinois product has collected 13 double- doubles and has registered double-digits in assists 16 times this season.

The New Jersey Nets play the finale of a five-game road trip when they visit the Jazz on Monday at EnergySolutions Arena. It is the second and final game of the campaign between the squads. On November 8th, Vince Carter scored 30 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Nets handed the Jazz a 96-89 loss at Continental Airlines Arena.

New Jersey has lost three of its last four at Utah. The Nets have won five of the last six contests in the series.

Utah tries to get back on the winning track against New Jersey. On Saturday, Bobby Jackson scored 21 points off the bench to lead the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets over the Jazz, 94-83, at the Ford Center.

Williams finished with 27 points on 11-of-19 from the field and dished out eight assists in the loss to the Hornets for the Jazz, who have dropped two of three since winning four in a row. Paul Millsap recorded a double- double with 15 points and 17 boards, while Derek Fisher contributed 14 points and Mehmet Okur netted 11 in defeat.

On the injury front for Utah, forward Carlos Boozer (bruised left knee) is questionable for Monday’s contest. He played just over three minutes against the Hornets and scored two points.

Boozer leads the Jazz in scoring (22.1 ppg) and rebounding (11.8 rpg). He has recorded 33 double-doubles and has scored in double-digits in 41 outings this season.

The Jazz are 16-5 at home this season. They are scheduled to host Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday and will visit reigning MVP Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns on Saturday. Utah is 2-0 against Phoenix and 1-1 versus San Antonio.
