First coach in Pacers’ history passes away 07.13.2007

A former Notre Dame assistant, Staverman was hired in 1967 prior to the Pacers’ first ABA season. Staverman led the team to a 38-40 record in 1967-68 but was replaced by Bob "Slick" Leonard early in the next season after a 2-7 start. He also coached the New York Knicks in the 1977-78 season, posting a record of 18-27.
"We are sorry to hear about the passing of Larry Staverman," said Pacers CEO and president Donnie Walsh in a statement. "By being our first coach, he was a believer in the franchise at a time when there were many doubters. That is something we recognize and hope our fans recognize. Our condolences go to his family and friends."
Staverman also had a five-year career as a player in the NBA with career- averages of 4.7 points and 3.8 rebounds.
