Ellis earned 47 first-place votes and a total of 352 points from a panel of 129 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada and edged out Kevin Martin of the Sacramento Kings, who finished second in the balloting, compiling 44 first-place votes and 349 total points.
The voting was the closest since 1990-91 when Scott Skiles of Orlando edged out Kevin Gamble of Boston by four votes.
Utah’s Deron Williams was third in the voting with 101 points.
After averaging 6.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 2005-06, Ellis increased his scoring to a career-high 16.5 points per game, the largest increase in the NBA this season.
Ellis also averaged 3.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.71 steals per contest in 77 games this season.
