Josh Childress and Marvin Williams added 17 points apiece for the Hawks, who have won two games in a row after a six-game skid. Tyronn Lue, Zaza Pachulia and Shelden Williams all scored 11 for Atlanta, which played without leading scorer Joe Johnson who missed his second straight game with a right calf injury.
Mike Miller scored 22 of his 29 points in the second half for Memphis, which dropped its sixth straight game. Rudy Gay had 15 points and Stromile Swift had 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who own the worst record (15-48) in the NBA.
Trailing 105-103, Smith rebounded an Anthony Johnson missed three-pointer, scored a layup and was fouled. The made free throw put Atlanta ahead by one with 11.5 seconds left.
Memphis then had a chance to win out of a timeout, but Miller’s three-point attempt rimmed off at the buzzer.
Atlanta opened the game with a 10-4 surge, capped by a Pachulia layup. The Hawks led throughout the stanza and took a 31-23 advantage after the first quarter.
A Salim Stoudamire three sparked a 9-0 run to open the second quarter as the Hawks extended their lead to 17, 40-23 early in the session.
Memphis was able to cut the margin to 10, 60-50 by the intermission.
The Grizzlies mounted a comeback in the third quarter behind Miller, who scored 14 points in the frame. His three-pointer with 2:48 left in the period pulled Memphis within two, 76-74. Swift’s driving dunk a half minute later tied the game at 76.
Atlanta held an 81-80 edge heading into the final quarter.
After two Pachulia free throws put the Hawks, ahead 101-96, Memphis went on a 7-0 run, capped by Gay’s jumper, which put the Grizzlies ahead, 103-101, with a minute to go.
Williams’ jumper then tied the game with 41 ticks left, but Damon Stoudamire countered with a jumper of his own putting Memphis back up two, 105-103 with 28.4 seconds remaining.

Atlanta’s Speedy Claxton missed the game with a sore right knee...Memphis shot 50 percent and Atlanta shot 47.6 percent from the field...Atlanta beat the Grizzlies in the only other meeting this season, 97-88, on December 15 at Memphis...The Grizzlies fell to 4-28 on the road,
