Jermaine O’Neal, Jamario Moon Traded for Shawn Marion, Marcus Banks

Today it was revealed that two of the NBA’s most eminently tradeable players will be swapping cities, with the Miami Heat acquiring Jermaine O’Neal and the Toronto Raptors picking up Shawn Marion. Also involved in the deal are dunk contest dud Jamario Moon and Tracy Morgan lookalike Marcus Banks, two of your standard middling-to-mediocre book-balancers caught in the crossfire of the NBA’s CBA.

While I never expect particularly creative work from NBA general managers (well, except Zeke, and he’s in hiding now), it’s still a little disappointing to see the most obvious possible trade scenario come to fruition. O’Neal and Marion, both forehead-heavy underperformers shoehorned into subprime situations, are now set to start from scratch, again finding a role in equally unpropitious circumstances. Unless this is one of those classic move-before-a-move scenarios (what I like to call a "Gretzky trade"), I can’t help but deem this a desperation deal for both parties.

Still, I could be wrong. Shawn Marion could find his niche with the Craptors and kick-start a season which has thus far been a disappointment on a par with five of the Police Academy sequels. Miami, meanwhile, could find a way to make something of their Haslem-Beasley-O’Neal front three.

Don’t bet on it, though. In fact, if you live in a territory where such activities are legal, I’d advise you to put money on both franchises aborting their respective personnel experiments before long. As my man Sami said recently, sometimes you just have to blow it up and start over.

So, what do you think of the trade? Could either side benefit significantly from this deal or are TO and MIA just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic? Let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment below.

the first round pick isnt a big issue....since it only applys when the raptors make the playoffs....so the pick will never be in the lottery.....also Jamario moon has been underperforming and joey graham has stepped it up...also sources close 2 marion have said that he is in deep consideration of resigning withthe raptors because ofthe potential the team has .

TO just got robbed !JO, Moon, and a 1st round pick !But the worst is that Toronto get Banks, with his ridiculous contract, I just hate it as a raptor fan. It would have preferred getting nothing and still giving up on Moon, as a raptor fan.The season is just over, and the next one too, and the next one also, GREAT JOB Colangelo .

\1 I think it helps both. Jamario Moon can sort of replace Marion and they get another big O’neal. Toronto gets another scorer who can help CB4 and a solid back up pg along with some cash to help resign bosh in a year. neither team is gonna explode like denver with b-b-b-billups, but its a good trade for both if marion and oneal can stay healthy. .

I think this trade works for TO, it gives them much needed defence and rebounding at that position, and if he finds his niche - someone for calderon to run with, and worse comes to worst he leaves in 09 and they make a ton capspace for trades to try and improve next year.the add on of marcus works for TO cuz they were looking for some experience at the 1, now his contract hurts them in the long run, but the benfits from marion’s makes up for it... this also makes sense in miami too, the marion thing wasnt working, now they have a proven vertern at the 5, and a ton of capspace in 2010 for riley’s bidding war for another starthe add on of marcus works for TO cuz they were looking for some experience at the 1, now his contract hurts them in the long run, but the benfits from marion’s makes up for it. .

If J’O will stay healthy I believe that Miami did a good job. Wade is getting what he want -another big O’Neal \1I cannot wait to see them together on floor... in my opinion, Miami will benefit more of this trade - duo Marion-Bosh? I dont know... I would trade him for Jamaal Craford \1 (or combination SG+PF) and try to develop Andrea Bargnani. But I am not GM \1 \1 only basketball fan \1Ps: sorry 4 bad english .
