Dallas, TX (Basketball News) - The Dallas Mavericks announced on Thursday the hiring of Paul Westphal as an assistant coach.

Westphal most recently served as head coach at Pepperdine University from 2001 to 2006.

"We are excited to add Paul to our staff to replace Sam Vincent," said head coach Avery Johnson. "Paul brings a wealth of coaching experience at many levels to the Mavericks, as well as experience as a player in the league."

Westphal brings eight years of NBA coaching experience to the Mavericks. He was the head coach of the Phoenix Suns from 1992 to 1995 and was also the head man with Seattle from 1998 to 2000.

Westphal played 12 seasons in the NBA for Boston, Phoenix, New York and Seattle.
