Memphis Grizzlies 2006 Draft Preview

06.22.2006

(Basketball News) - Memphis made the playoffs for the third straight year, and was swept out of the postseason for the third year in a row. The Grizzlies are good enough to get to the playoffs, but they just can’t seem to earn a victory.

Something is missing and unfortunately for the Grizzlies the draft is not going to solve their problems. They own the 24th overall pick and will most likely look to add a big man who can rebound and play some defense.

All-Star Pau Gasol had an excellent year, as he led the club in scoring (20.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.9 rpg). The 7-0 power forward is the Grizzlies best player and the team will continue to try and build around him, whether its in the draft or through free agency or trades.

Sixth Man of the Year Mike Miller averaged 13.7 points and 5.4 boards in 74 games this past season, while veteran Eddie Jones contributed 11.8 points and 2.4 assists per contest. Rookie Hakim Warrick showed that he could be a big contributor in the future and forward Shane Battier had another solid campaign.

Damon Stoudamire, who played just 27 games in 2005-06 because of a ruptured right patellar tendon, and Bobby Jackson share the point guard duties. They are a solid tandem, but the team needs them to be healthy.

Unfortunately for Memphis, the draft will not get the Grizzlies the help they need to get them over the hump in the playoffs.

Key Player(s): Shane Battier (Forward), Pau Gasol (Forward), Bobby Jackson (Guard), Eddie Jones (Guard), Mike Miller (Guard), Damon Stoudamire (Guard), Hakim Warrick (Forward), Lorenzen Wright (Center/Forward).

Team Needs: Toughness down low and help at guard.

Draft picks: 1st round (24th overall).
