(Basketball News) - Jason Williams dropped a game-high 28 points, including two three-pointers in the final 1:17, as the Memphis Grizzlies outlasted the Seattle SuperSonics, 98-97, on Friday at Key Arena.
Lorenzen Wright had 16 points and eight rebounds, and an under-the-weather Mike Miller finished with 13 points, as Memphis won for the fourth time in five games.
The Grizzlies won for the first time in 16 chances at Key Arena and are above .500 (6-5) at the latest point in a season in franchise-history.
Memphis was trailing 79-71 to open the fourth quarter, but battled back to take the lead at 84-83 on a Williams three-pointer with 6 1/2 minutes to go. A Murray basket put the SuperSonics back up by one, but Shane Battier drilled a three to put Memphis up two, 87-85.
Rashard Lewis hit a shot to tie it up, but Battier followed with a pair of free throws to give Memphis the 89-87 lead. Vladimir Radmanovic scored with 3 1/2 minutes to go to knot the game once again and Ronald Murray drained a free throw to put the Sonics ahead by one.
Battier and Murray each traded a pair of free throws to make it 92-91 with 1 1/2 minutes left before a Williams three gave the Grizzlies a two-point lead. Murray followed with a pair of free throws to tie things at 94 with 1:05 left.
Memphis’ Dahntay Jones blocked a Murray shot to give his team the ball before Williams knocked down the three with 10 seconds left. Brent Barry missed a three at the other end and Wright hit 1-of-2 free throws for the 98-94 advantage. Radmanovic hit a three with under one second remaining for the final score.
Williams’ 28 points was a season high.
The Grizzlies activated Jones from the injured list and placed forward Theron Smith on the list because of back spasms prior to the game.
Memphis is off until Sunday when it visits Gary Payton and the Los Angeles Lakers.
