Anucha Browne Sanders Case Shows Stephon Marbury More Celebrity Than N.Y. Knicks’ PG

September 13 07

The Associated Press reports on Stephon Marbury testifying at the sexual harassment case involving the New York Knicks:

Knicks guard Stephon Marbury testified Wednesday in the case of a fired team executive who has accused coach Isiah Thomas of sexual harassment, calling the lawsuit absurd while downplaying an encounter with a drunken intern.

After hearing about the lawsuit brought by Anucha Browne Sanders, "I laughed," Marbury said in U.S. District Court. "It was more of a joke than anything."

When he took the stand, Marbury admitted pulling up and asking the intern, "Are you going to get in the truck?" He said she answered, "Yes."

U.S. District Judge Gerard E. Lynch cut off any more questioning on the encounter, saying more details wouldn’t help the jury decide the case.

After Marbury finished testifying, he rode down 23 floors in a crowded elevator, saying to no one in particular: "Money makes you do crazy things, man."

Then he left the courthouse, smiling and singing a song out loud. When pressed to divulge more about his relationship with the intern, he instead commented cheerfully on a reporter’s shoes.

My Quick Take: I recently wrote on Stephon Marbury making headlines this summer with his unusual behavior. Well, the ’Summer of Steph’ is rolling into fall. Only now, he’s a witness in the Isiah Thomas-Anucha Browne Sanders sexual harassment trial, which happens to be New York’s juiciest tabloid case since the Diddy gun incident in 2000.

Thomas, of course, is Marbury’s boss and the coach/GM of the New York Knicks.

The team, who has grown tired of Marbury’s antics, doesn’t want him publicly declaring that "money makes you do crazy things, man." They would also prefer he didn’t comment on a reporter’s shoe when leaving the courtroom.

But here’s the Knicks’ other problem: Marbury’s now more famous for his off-court antics than on-court achievements He thinks his brand and celebrity status take precedence over his duties as point guard.

I appreciate Marbury’s recent acts of charity. But I also appreciated Starbury, the attacking point guard who posted 20 and 10 every night. Anybody know where he went? The Knicks must be wishing Starbury reappears for training camp.
