Golden State Warriors Pass Phoenix Suns As Frontrunners In Kevin Garnett Sweepstakes

July 26 07

WarriorsWorld.net and Tim Kawakami, a San Jose Mercury sports writer, discuss the Garnett rumors:

WW.NET: Warrior Fans are on 24/7 KG watch, is it just a tease or does Mully have it in him to pull off a deal for Kg?

Tim: Since I’m right along there on the 24/7 Warriors-Garnett watch and have been on sentry duty for 2 years now, it’s hard for me to say it’s impossible. Actually, I think it’s very possible and that’s one thing I think Mullin has always known: He has the best match for what Minnesota should want. Let me emphasize SHOULD, because who knows what Kevin McHale, in his trembly heart of hearts, really wants for KG.

As I’ve written a few times, the longer we go into this, the less likely that other serious bidders are going to stay bidding—
Phoenix would be the big dog in this one. If Phoenix has decided Amare Stoudamire won’t be moved for KG, then the Warriors become the next-most-likely candidate, it’s just up to McHale.

Mullin made the Baron Davis move. He made the Stephen Jackson/Al Harrington for Dunleavy/Murphy/Diogu move. He can do big deals. And those were nothing compared to the time and will he has put into chasing KG. So let’s see...

My Quick Take: I agree with Kawakami’s answer. Point blank: Golden State is the front-runner to acquire The Big Ticket from Minnesota. The Warriors possess the guts and parts to pull off a blockbuster, mega-trade for Kevin Garnett.

I think Golden State, as a franchise, has the moxie to complete such a complex transaction. The Warriors’ organization, at every level, is open to taking risks and changing their roster. Their coach, Don Nelson, while personable, often resembles a mad-scientist, looking for odd and bizarre mismatches on the court. Their GM, Chris Mullin, isn’t afraid to pull the trigger on major trades. Their owner, Chris Cohan, re-hired their old coach, Don Nelson, even though the two were once engaged in a nasty lawsuit. Golden State is either smart enough or crazy enough to pull this deal off. You make the call.

Golden State is stocked with young players. The Wolves would probably get to pick two of the Warriors’ four developing players: Monta Ellis, Brandan Wright, Marco Belinelli, and Andris Biedrins. Minnesota could also get some financial flexibility if they acquired Sarunas Jasikevicius and Adonal Foyle. Jasikevicius’ contract expires after the 2007-08 season, while Foyle’s 8 million dollar salary comes off the books in the summer of 2009.

I disagree with Kawakami on a minor point. I think Garnett’s contract scared the Suns off of making a deal. It wasn’t about Amare Stoudemire; The Big Ticket was, well, too big a ticket. Phoenix would have been on the hook for his twenty million dollar salary plus a multi-million dollar trade kicker payment.

This is too rich a price for Phoenix. Robert Sarver, the Suns’ owner, has no interest in paying the luxury tax. He let Joe Johnson go to Atlanta. He recently dealt Kurt Thomas, a useful veteran, for cap relief.

Look for Golden State to eventually acquire Garnett. They have the guts and roster to pull off such a difficult transaction. And, unlike Phoenix, they seem prepared to open their wallets.

All you Golden State fans are on crack if you think you’ll pa-------the second round. You just aren’t good enough. A one hit wonder trading for a superstar means 50 wins max and a 1st round exit in the west. .

KG is untradable. His I don’t know why every is so excited about this. His skill level and massive contract ensure that the only way he will be switching teams is through free agency. .

I agree that if Warriors are looking long term they should not make a deal for KG, however if the Warriors (as I believe they will) are looking to hit the championship now while Nelson is still around (maybe 1-2 years left of coaching) then Warriors going for KG is the way to go. With KG we have a solid chance of contending this year. He is not a guaranteed championship, but with the return of Nelson last year the Warriors were able to do the unthinkable, so I look forward to seeing what will happen this year. I personally say make the trade if its possible, add the height with quickness to the team, continue to play the run and gun style play and lets put faith in the coach and see what he can do. .

It’s gonna happen!!! Holy cow, I’ve been hyping a move to get Brand, but I have been number crunching and financially the player you would rather trade is Biedrins over Wright. Biedrins will make around $11-13 million next year, while right will make a total of $13 million the next 4 years. I would trade Ellis, Biedrins, Foyle, Sarunas, and Peitrus, nothing more, nothing less: this will be equivalent to $19.6 million for Garnett’s $22 million, which I think will work. Nothing more nothing less. We cannot take back any more salary. If we pick up Blount or Hudson or Jaric. If we do, we can’t resign Barnes. With all the roster spots open, we can resign, Barnes and Powell and take some fliers on Pops Mensah Bonsu, James White and Alexander Johnson to fill out the bench, signing these guys for cheap. I also forgot to mention that having Gooden around softens’ the blow to Pietrus, and when he’s gone in 2 years, we still have Brandan Wright, at which point in time he should be blossoming. .

Everyone’s talkin’ about Garnett. I think that there’s too much noise around that guy-he’s not so good. Of course he is a good player but not as good to lift the team to the title. GS has got rid of JRich & to only possibly gain Garnett they’ll have to let go guys like Ellis. Like someone wrote before Garnett won’t guarantee the title. I thing that KG might only make the Warriors more competitive-no more than that. They already lost JRich & now they’re on they way to loose next fundamental players. Like it’s been said before 3-4 yrs & KG will not be a threat to any player. It’s just not worth to fight 4 that trade. I’ll be counting on GS though cause "I Believe" & they’re truly a good squad. .

it doesnt matter where KG goes but i think the most exciting bit is that KG will actually become a legitimate contender for MVP if he goes to a good team. he posts about 23,12 and almost 5 assists plus 2 blocks and sum decent steals and hes defintly MVP material. its just he doesnt play for a good enough team and they dont win enough games. but without KG the wolves would barely win any games at all! OH and i think the bobcats could make a deal with JRich and other young up and comin players... think about it! MJ has made sum crazy decisions (not as a player lol) so he could make that trade! .

There’s no way the Warriors would (or should) trade 3 of their 4 young studs to go the Wolves for 3 or 4 yrs of KG. So people getting excited about seeing a Wolves lineup of Foye, Ellis, Smith, Wright and Biedrins might as well forget it. KG is a great player, but letting go of Ellis, Wright and Biedrins for a couple of years of KG will be an idiotic trade for the Warriors. Yes, the Warriors will become instant contenders with KG, Baron and SJax, but having KG doesn’t guarantee a championship. The Suns have been playing with Nash, Stoudemire, Marion, Barbosa, etc. for 3 yrs now ... have they won a championship? I didn’t think so! So why mortgage the rest of the decade for 3 or 4 yrs of KG, then go back to the lottery for the next 10 yrs after? .

A couple of developing players on the GS roster and some bad contracts are not what the Wolves are looking for in exchange for KG. If the Big Ticket will be traded multiple teams will need to be involved. I still say the Suns have the upper hand. All this may not matter if KG decides he wants to be a WOLF for life. .

The Warriors are a one hit wonder and Garnett will leave them to go to the Suns. He won’t stay with a non title team. .

if the twolves trade KG they might as well start over comepletely! The wolves should give up ricky davis and KG for Monta Ellis, Brandan Wright,Andris Biedrins and foyle. This would give the T wovles a young team to start the season with and the warriors a real chance in the west! .

great asset to the warriors if he ends up there especially after their exciting playoff run last year they dismantled the mavericks who was unstoppable throughout the regular season so i hope kg ends up there though i know he wont cuz he wants a ring .

$arver is too cheap to even keep Kurt Thomas, do you think he would spend 20 mil on Garnett? On surrendering two future first-round picks as part of Phoenix’s payroll-slashing trade of Kurt Thomas to Seattle:"It’s hard. I went back and forth with [new Suns general manager Steve Kerr] a lot on that one. "It’s difficult, but the key for us is that we’re right there, so the most important thing we can do is keep our core together for the next three years. And so we have to make some sacrifices [such as trading Thomas to save $8 million in luxury taxes]. Keeping our core together was [priority] No. 1, keeping the [2008 unprotected first-round] pick from Atlanta was No. 2 and the other picks ... trading them was something we had to do." .

I don’t think one can automatically assume that KG would accept a trade to Golden State. If he wouldn’t go to Boston to play with Pierce, why would he want to go play with Baron Davis who is a perennial question mark with his injury history.Suns to play with Nash and the gang, or Lakers to play with Kobe...otherwise there is no real guarentee that any team KG is traded to is an instant contenter. I think KG would rather stay with Foye, Brewer, Smith and the Wolves and see is they can make a run in a year or two. He likes being the King of Minnesota and despite all the pitiful moves McHale has made, the team really has a lot of promising youth. .
