No GM For Stephen Jackson: Why Stephon Marbury wouldn’t help Golden StateOctober 19 08 Active players have no business moonlighting in the GM chair. Back in the day, Chicago’s Michael Jordan wanted to dump most of his supporting cast for ‘Carolina’ guys. Kobe Bryant dominated ‘The Net’ when video surfaced of him criticizing Los Angeles for vetoing the Andrew Bynum for Jason Kidd trade. Jordan and Bryant’s evaluations were wrong. Their meddling put management in a tough spot and left teammates feeling slighted. Recently, one of my favourite players, Stephen Jackson, caught the GM bug. In a phone interview from China, ‘Jax’ ‘guaranteed’ ESPN Truehoop blogger Henry Abbott that Golden State would pursue Stephon Marbury if he were released. Where to begin? Perhaps, the wing was jet-lagged from the time difference. To be fair, Jackson’s intentions were good. After all, he is close friends with the Knicks’ controversial table-setter. But his comments, as team captain, were a bit reckless. Marbury wouldn’t help. His baggage is too great for a young, impressionable team. The Warriors need stability, not some wildcard who treats the offense like an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of shots. But I’ll play along. Suppose Marbury gets released before the regular season begins. And suppose Golden State signs him to play point guard temporarily while Monta Ellis recovers. What happens when Mr. Moped returns? Ellis, according to Jackson, is making a full recovery. This would create an uncomfortable logjam at the one-spot with Starbury sitting on the bench, towel draped over his head, and most likely pouting. The Warriors have other options. Reformed knucklehead Damon Stoudamire could be had for the veteran’s minimum. He’d fill-in adequately for Ellis and then accept a supporting role when the youngster returns. Last year, Jackson had a career year. After overcoming so much, he is close to stardom. But personnel decisions must be left to the GM –whoever that is in Golden State. Is Jackson right? Would Marbury help Golden State? Let us know in the comment box below and come back to HoopsVibe the Blog for more NBA tidbits. Photo courtesy of dinur.

NONE OF THIS MOVING HIM TO SHOOTING GUARD CRAP, STARTING PG, 30 MINS PLUS A GAME, GUARANTEED WE WELL SEE STEPHON MARBURY PLAYING LIKE A GREAT BALLER THAT HE WAS ONCE AGAIN . | Posted by O.Sandor on 10.19.2008 | Hi there, thanks for all your comments. Even those who disagreed, which is fine. But I stand by what I write. Here is my thinking. I don’t dislike Marbury. In fact, I appreciate his donation to victims of Katrina and the philosophy behind his low cost shoe-line. Nobody is doubting his talent, it is his track record. After Minny he stopped making those around him better, the true sign of a good point guard. New Jersey was a disaster. STAT and the Matrix didn’t like him in Phoenix. And New York has also been disappointing to say the least. What would make Golden State different? Sure, Marbury has something to prove, but at a certain point you are what you are. Somebody suggested Marbury could play the 2-spot next to Ellis. This is unlikely. Last I checked Stephen Jackson was the club’s best player and they just spent 50 million for Corey Maggette. Jackson or Maggette will get 35-40 minutes per game at shooting guard. It depends how they want to go there. There is also Kelenna Azubuike, a young up-and-comer at off-guard. And the team has invested in developing Marco Belinelli. So where does Marbury get minutes at the two? I don’t see that. Perhaps Stoudamire is done, but the Warriors would be better served with a fill-in, stop-gap guy, then a big name who would have issues fitting in once Ellis is back. Anyway, just thoughts. Thanks for commenting. Out … . | Posted by on 10.19.2008 | Yeah Jackson can’t petition for Marbury because he is udnercutting whoever they currently have at point Ellis, the guy from Jersey marcus Williams . | Posted by Jax No GM on 10.19.2008 | Future Scout: the difference is he’s a journalist, not an employee of the Warriors, who is compromising a current teammate by poloticking for somebody else. . | Posted by No marbury, non at all on 10.19.2008 | There is a reason Marbury is being paid to leave New York, he is done. This isn’t 1997. He destroys teams: Phoenix, New York, and even Minny. Marbury can’t play, he is a cancer, how can having Marbury around be good? Not sure about Stoudamire, though! . | Posted by B-RAD A.K.A KING SPITTA, A.K.A MY JEWELRY LOOK LIKE GLITTA, A.K.A BALLIN AND BLINGIN OUTTA CONTROL, A.K.A I OWN THE BURBS on 10.19.2008 | YO, YO, YO, YO, YO O, STOP HATIN FO REAL DOUGH. THIS MOVE WOULD BE EFFECTIVE, FOR THE WARRIORS DAWG. STARBURY IS A BALLA, SHOT CALLER, SUPA STAR DIFFERENCE MAKA. WHERE DID YA GET HOOPS KNOWLEDGE SON, THE UNVERSITY OF PHOENIX? YO HOMIE YOU NEED TO BE LIKE ROCAFELLA YOU NEED TO GET A CLUE. THIS MOVE WOULD DA TRUTH, LIKE I AM IN THE BOOTH. I’M FINISH WIT YOU DUDE, LIKE MY OPPONENTS WHEN I SPIT, YEAH... LIKE MC HAMMER YOU CAN’T TOUCH THIS . | Posted by Future Scout on 10.19.2008 | Stoudamire has no game left. I’d rather have Grayson Broucher. Or Starbury. Oly you’re wrong on this one saying this is a bad move. Funny how you say Jackson is trying to play GM, so what are you doing? We all play that game so stop hatin and get a clue . | Posted by And 1 on 10.19.2008 | Is it true the professor is going to try out with the Warriors? That would be interesting. I’d love to see him in the NBA. He is good at organized ball. They could use a real PG like him. He’d be the next Jason Williams . | Posted by Yeah I Said It! on 10.19.2008 | (H)OLY Crap has proven again why he is clueless about basketball. Look this is a great move the pros are better than the cons. They need a PG like Marbury, because he does fit their style of play. At this point in his career Marbury would relish the opportunity to play for a competitive team that wants him. Amazing how you say he would be sitting the bench. Last time I checked they had a Davis-Ellis combo that worked out fine. They were going to keep him had LA Clippers made a late offer. So it still be a two man thing. M.Ellis is not guaranteed to be healthy, it’s sports anything could happen. So having Steph around isn’t a bad thing. Go take a hoops 101 course and learn before you speak . | Posted by fansince14 on 10.19.2008 | I say DO IT Warriors, at least Marbury is a true point guard. No need to experiment on that.He should fit in nicely and when healthy is a big threat for anybody. He can shoot and can dish the rock as well.DO IT Warriors give him a chance and maybe he is one piece of the puzzle you’re trying to put together. . | Posted by 5th Comment on 10.19.2008 | Jackson is no fool. he knows Starbury has talent and they could use it right now. He’s not worried about a damn grudge that happen several years ago. Since then he has had major success everywhere he went and even has a ring. He’s probably more thankful that did happen, atleast he can flash around his ring in his face to motive him. This would be a great move that should be pursued. I see no problem with this. Like the others said if Davis did it, no reason Marbury couldn’t they do have many similarities. His style fits perfectly . | Posted by We Still Believe on 10.19.2008 | yea marbury would be great. I sat courtside and watched him battle baron davis 2 years ago, and it was a legit battle, the only difference was marbury can really shoot. What impressed me the most was how he competed with great commitment, which he could replicate with a fresh start as others have suggested. This would be a dream move for the warriors, as we would essentially not have lost baron davis with marbury as a replacement. Its like adding maggette, turiaf, and randolph to last years team and switching david with marbury. I’ll take that with 48 wins last year. Davis is great, but in our offense, marbury could put up similar numbers.DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!!!!!!!! . | Posted by No jax and marbury on 10.19.2008 | Tru Warrier ... Steve Adamek, the lead beat writer for The Bergeron Record on Jackson and marbury’s dysfunctional friendship ... author is right on this ... "And then Stevie Jax could hang out with the guy who basically dragged him down from starting the opening game of his rookie season in New Jersey to an end-of-the-bench player by the middle of that season. Ask any Net person from that era and they’ll tell you the worse thing Jackson did was start hanging around with Steph. It’s why the team didn’t sign him for the following season." This was on hoopshype rumors today ... . | Posted by 123 on 10.19.2008 | I agree if Davis could do it, than Marbury could to. They have similar styles of play, regardless what some may think, it could work. . | Posted by Tru Warrier on 10.19.2008 | I agree he is right. Anyone who says otherwise, is an idiot and should never be allow to talk about basketball again. Marbury needs a fresh start. His style fits the system. He wants to play for a competive team he can be a mjor contributor to, and he is in his last year so he’ll do what’s right to get that last big contract. He can’t do that with the Knicks, or most teams in the league. But the Warriors would be a great fit . | 1 2 Next >
