No Sam Cassell or Gary Payton, Damon Stoudamire Best For Boston Celtics?

January 10 08

The AM Take: Gary Payton has come and gone. Sam Cassell is still a Clipper. Now the rumor is Memphis’ Damon Stoudamire.

Boston, despite their 29-4 record, has an Achilles heel. Rajon Rondo is their only true point guard; opposing defenses have enjoyed success applying full court, on-ball pressure against back-up Eddie House.

House is a tweener. A shooting guard trapped in a point guard’s body. In December, the Pistons badgered him into committing turnovers when running the offense.

So the Celtics need a second-string ball-handler. Someone to fill-in for Rondo and provide insurance in case of injury. Is Stoudamire the answer?

First off, forget the circumstances surrounding his leave from Memphis. Their separation was mutually agreed upon and reached in an amicable way. The Grizzlies wanted to develop young players, so Stoudamire didn’t fit their rebuilding plans.

Mighty Mouse is still serviceable. He can score, pass, and direct traffic. And the Celtics’ can cover his defensive shortcomings for fifteen minutes a night.

Matching contracts in a trade could be complicated. Stoudamire is owed the balance of this season’s 4 million dollar salary and is scheduled to earn 4.5 million dollars next season.

The green-and-white is already over the luxury tax threshold, which limits what contracts they can assume via trade. Rumor has it Memphis and Stoudamire are talking buyout.

A buyout would allow Boston to sign Stoudamire to a pro-rated, veteran’s minimum contract. The rumor mill would stop and the Celtics could have their final piece.

I dont understand why people think that celtics need an old point guard ?? they dont seem to need one at all, i mean they have 30victory and 4 defeats !!!! so why bring cassell?? or payton ??? i dont even talk about stoudamire as he s so lame !! the C’s are great so far , so lets avoid to provide them aging selfish poor point guards !! lets keep it that way ! .

GArY "I wear gloves when i shoot" GAYton is terrible at this point in his career. He is one of the most over-rated point guards ever. Sam "ET" Cassell is too ugly to role on that team, plus he is a me first kinda guy, not a Celtic kinda guy. Damon "It’s always 4:20" Stoudemire is just too high to do anything not connected to a roach clip. .

Have any of you watched Gary Payton play in the last few years? His D is awful and his jumper is even worse. I’d rather bring back Cousy than GP. I do like Cassell and think he could be the best fit but Damon is the most realistic option and still very servicable. .

GP would be far and away the best value/impact. And of course, he and Ray Allen are best buddies so the entertainment value would be high too. .

Who would you rather have on your team One of the Greatest Point Guards ever I’ll say in the Top 5 Gary Payton. The only Point guard to win defensive player of the year and should have won MVP if it wasn’t for Michael Jordan. remember payton was the best point guard from 1995-2004 who accepted a role from the bnech. Payton can still do it even with the MIam Heat he a 12 games where he had above 20 points. ANd everyone should remember DECEMBER 25, 2005 WHERE 37 year old GARY PAYTON FRIED KOBE BRYANT PAYTON went 9-11 21 point and was player of the game. while bryant shot 0-9 3pt. Please Boston sign Gary Payton what happened last night without Ray allen. Payton can play both Point and Shooting guard. He was starting at Shooting guard BOSTON would have beat BOBCATS .

Sam "ET" Cassell is too selfish. Gary "Shoots like wearing gloves" is too selfish, and Damon "Marijuana man" Stoudamire is too high. Why don’t they go after a good player like Fred "Wholesome" Hoiberg? .

I think Cassell would be best. He already has played with KG. and KG has shown that he can keep Sam I Am under control. Plus Sam, just wants another ring before he retires. He would be a good fit .

Sign Gary Payton he is a better Poit Guard. Remember who hit the game winning shots in 2 games of the NBA Finals. His defense is better than the other two and he still can run the floor. .
