What should come first for Kobe Bryant: Team USA or the L.A. Lakers?

August 17 08

What comes first: country or club? There is no easy answer for NBA players who must balance international competitions with an 82 game regular season.

Choosing country has consequences. For example, Jorge Garbajosa picked his country by rushing back from injury to represent Spain in the 2007 Euro Championship, which contributed to his club, the Toronto Raptors, buying out his contract this summer.

Choosing club also has consequences. Take Steve Nash. The tiny point guard represented Canada for over a decade, but, for a variety of reasons, has recently skipped international events to preserve his health for the Phoenix Suns. Fair or not, the Canadian press has slammed the two-time MVP.

This brings us to Los Angeles Laker and Team USA superstar Kobe Bryant. Or is it the other way around? For Bryant, representing stars-and-stripes comes first, out-ranking club obligations with the purple-and-gold.

“You’re playing for your country, there’s more at stake. I think when you’re playing for the NBA championship, you’re actually playing for a brand, you’re playing for whatever motivation – proving people wrong or whatever,” he said.

“When you put on a USA uniform, you’re playing for something bigger than all that. You’re representing your country, and our country is going up against the other country, trying to prove who’s best. For me, that holds more weight.” (Yahoo sports)

Nothing is simple with ‘Black Mamba’; every word must be critiqued. Below are both sides of the argument stating why winning for Team USA and L.A. should be priority one.

Read it. Hit us with thoughts in the opinion box. Again, what do tou think should come first for Bryant: winning a gold medal for Team USA or winning another NBA Title for the Lakers?

Why Team USA (country) should come first for Bryant:

  • Playing for your nation should be a tremendous honour. As Bryant said it’s country against country “trying to prove who’s best” by winning gold.
  • Beijing isn’t another international event for the American squad. It’s Bryant and Redeem Team’s opportunity to make up for past failures at the FIBA World Championship in Japan and the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Why the Lakers (club) should come first for Bryant:

  • Winning an NBA Title for the Lakers ’brand’ provides Bryant the biggest spotlight. After all, Olypmic basketball isn’t a headline-grabbing global event like soccer’s World Cup. The NBA Finals is the sport’s biggest stage; the Lakers the sport’s glamour club.
  • Bryant has passed on several chances to play for Team USA. If representing his country was so important then why wait until the 2007 Americas Tournament?
  • Face it; the man is a career Laker. He won’t play for another NBA team. Most people aren’t buying the Europe rumours. And his Team USA commitment likely ends after Beijing. So how could a short-term like a gold medal trump another NBA Title?

Hi, Thanks for reading and commenting. I selected Kobe for two reasons: first, he is the biggest name in pro basketball and whatever he says is news. Second, and most importantly, I selected him because he discussed his publicly priorities. By him putting it out there, I had to respond. Thanks for reading and commenting. .

Good question, I’m sure most NBA fans have been wondering the same thing when they see the gusto the USA players are playing defense and the unselfishness they are displaying. The intensity Team USA have been playing at leads people to think how good these players can be if they played like that even only 60 of 82 NBA games a season. It is nice to see after the failures for Team USA in the last 3 major world contests, 2002 & 2006 FIBA World Championships & ’04 Athens Olympics.I’d have to say that these players are showing a major desire to win a gold and each and every one are showing how proud they are to represent our country. Frankly I’m delighted to see that despite their rivalries they have come together and supported each other, and are showing they are placing their country over their individual teams. Besides, it’s not like they can’t do both being that these games are played when the NBA is in its offseason. Right???Go Team USA!!!! .

Hi no-name poster. Thanks for reading and commenting. It’s a different question. Yeah, I think Bryant wants to win everything, but he has stated winning the gold is more important than an NBA Title. What we are looking at is whether that’s right! Thanks for commenting and reading. .

This Is the dumbest discussion ever brought up by anybody. Winning Gold for your country is equally as important for any player let alone Kobe Bryant. He is a competitor so he automatically wants to be known to have won it all in everything "basketball". What is most important to Kobe Bryant is Kobe Bryant. Winning for his club or country more important? Silly question but I guess not because it made me comment on it huh. .

They are equally important. Playing for the Lakers is his job. Doing a good job is expected and leads to financial rewards.Playing for his country is an honor. Since he has the talent to represent - its an obligation.Stop criticizing the man’s decisions and start admiring what he has accomplished. If anyone of you can do better - I’ll defend you too.Enjoy. .

I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT PLAYING FOR YOUR COUNTRY IS MORE IMPORTANT CAUSE A GOLD MEDAL IS MORE RARE THAN A CHAMPIONSHIP RING. YOU HAVE A CHANCE EVERY YEAR TO GET A CHAMPIONSHIP BUT ONLY ONCE EVERY FOUR YEARS TO GET A GOLD MEDAL .

of course playing for your country is more important than a nba championship. It’s representing your country, the freedom country where all his dreams came to a reality. To know that your amongst the few to wear the USA across his chest should be enough to value it more than the lakers.Kobe master the NBA, and won three titles and a mvp award. He have enough money to set him up for life, so why would he put the laker over United States Of American? Its a no brainer . .

I know what comes first for Bryant: himself. Always has been that way. LeBron is better. But I suppose the Lakers should number uno ... seeing as they pay him!! .
