What the Buck: Milwaukee gives Andrew Bogut $72 million, passes on Emeka Okafor

July 10 08

Averaging 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists on a 26-56 team is worth between 60 and 72 million dollars over five years.

Yes, the NBA is a good gig if you can get it. Case in point: Andrew Bogut. Yesterday, the Milwaukee Bucks signed their Aussie centre to the above extension, even though he’s produced inconsistent numbers for a mostly underachieving organization.

My opinion isn’t personal. I like Bogut; he’s a good, complementary piece. He also speaks his mind, talks regularly of pounding cold Fosters, and passes well out of the post.

Problem is these traits, while noble, can’t mask that Bogut would make a better bar buddy than franchise centre. Face it; the man from down-under is a solid five-man, but unworthy of superstar or even star money.

What has he won during his first few seasons? Bogut’s contract highlights a bigger issue. The Bucks still haven’t learned from the inflated contracts of the Larry Harris era.

Last spring, Milwaukee fired Harris for overpaying players. Their long-time executive was known for going Enron on folks, handing journeymen like Bobby Simmons starter money and giving star Michael Redd superstar money.

Clearly, the new front office hasn’t learned. Bogut was extended despite having a year remaining on his rookie contract. Why couldn’t new GM John Hammond have taken his time and negotiated?

Newly acquired Richard Jefferson and freshly signed sideline boss Scott Skiles emphasize defense, so restricted free agent Emeka Okafor might have been a better, and cheaper, fit than Bogut. Reports have Charlotte open to a sign-and-trade.

The Bucks could rebound from last year to make the playoffs. And Bogut’s future play could justify the extension. Of course, they could’ve waited, too.

Is Bogut worth between 60 and 72 million dollars? Would Emeka Okafor have been a better option? Get at us in the comment box below and come back to HoopsVibe The Blog for more NBA info. Image courtesy of photographer compujamery’s on-line portfolio.

hes not worth it. definitly not worth it. he should be added to a winning team. i think he would be a good fit in cleveland because they dont really hve a power forward that is that good. he would fit behind a guy like lebron because he is a role player. him and ben wallace have some hight they can add so its not just the lebron james show. .

Bogut is ok....but he doesnt deserve 13 plus mil per year to be a 4th option on Offense....remember they still have Redd (1st), Jefferson (2nd), MoWill (3rd) and than Bogut (4th) so ur telling me that he’s worth 13 per to be that 4th option behind them 3.....i dunno i think they feared that he would probably wanna be traded so they shut him up b4 he could say anything let alone start anything.... .

Fair comment Oly,However, you would think with 3 really good perimeter players like MO, Redd and RJ it might open up more space for Bogut to operate, but he has to see the ball. If R.J. was smart he’d feed the ball to Bogut at mid or high post, cut back door, or if the defenders low side curl off bogut for a hand off. Anyway I digress. My point is if Bogut gets a chance to be more productive Redd, MO and R.J. will find more teams double-teaming Bogut and that will open up their games. With someone shooting 20+ points at 60% sooner or later teams will double team him. It’s only logical. And their good perimeter shooters will get better looks. .

I’m not a Bogut fan. He just hasn’t produced much in his time in the NBA which warrants such a contract. Not even close in fact. .

yea like you all said CAN BECOME, WELL HES NOT YET AND 72 MILL MY FUCKIN ASSSSSSS, he hasnt prove a damm thing yet, n im sure no other team in the lg would have offered near as much money, most teams prolly 4 got about the guy, so i dunno why the bucks did so high they should of offered like 55 n prolly got away with it n if he declined o well hes not worth 72 at this point i mean come on brand only got 80 from philly and at least hes a proven player bogut is jus avg not top 5 centers in the lg n all centers suck which is said .

I’d agree that Bogut is a secondary option, often overlooked by teammates. And his numbers would rise with more attempts as he hits close to 60% of his attempts. Redd, while a great player, needs to look inside more. And Mo Williams is talented, but a tad too shot happy. Phil, do you see this changing though with the addition of another perimeter player in Jefferson? I know RJ is unselfish and can get points on the break and on the glass, but he still needs some plays run for him. .

At least if he sees the ball he will become a 20-10 player. Too many guards taking too many shots in this team. Talent on this team = playoffs the only problem was too much perimeter oriented basketball. Bogut can defend but he needs help as well. Give him the ball more on offense and you will see. His development has been held up by ball hog guards. Frustrating team to support. .

Your right in one sense, he could develop into a 20-10 guy. But what’s the harm in the Bucks waiting six months and seeing how he fits in with the new Milwaukee regime of Skiles and Jefferson? .

I think the deal is fair.... he is still fairly young and can improve to be a 20-10 guy possibly in the future. Over paid is rashard lewis. Hit me up .
