Staples Center Boos And Player Polls: Kwame Brown’s Nightmare With L.A. Lakers

January 19 08

Everyone has a bad day at work. The boss wants you to increase sales. Clients are unhappy. The photocopier is a nightmare and the coffee tastes like oil.

Kwame Brown’s NBA career has resembled one hellish day at the office. The boss, clients, photocopier, and coffee all rolled in one. And it’s an everyday thing.

After all, Washington was a disaster; Los Angeles isn’t working.

This week, Brown was gift wrapped another opportunity to salvage his career when Lakers’ starting center Andrew Bynum suffered an unfortunate knee injury.

With Bynum out for two months, Brown inherited the starting five-spot. Through two games, the former first overall pick is averaging just 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 4.5 turnovers.

Not great, but not terrible, either? So where’s the bad news? Well, Brown’s had an especially rough week even by his standards.

On Tuesday, CNNSI announced the results of a player survey. They asked 244 NBA players which current player gets the least out of the most talent. Brown was a runaway winner. Below are the full results from the survey.

CNNSI player poll: Which player gets the least out of the most talent?

Kwame Brown, Lakers C...... 17%
Tim Thomas, Clippers F...... 10%
Eddy Curry, Knicks C...... 7%
Vince Carter, Nets G...... 6%
Darko Milicic, Grizzlies C/F...... 5%
Tracy McGrady, Rockets G...... 4%
Darius Miles, Trail Blazers SF...... 4%
Stromile Swift, Grizzlies C/F...... 3%
J.R. Smith, Nuggets SG...... 3%
Gerald Green, Timberwolves G/F...... 2%

Getting called-out by your peers is bad. But it gets worse. Yesterday, the Staples Center faithful officially turned on Brown, showering the hulking post with more boos than Ashley Simpson at the Orange Bowl.

I’ve ragged on Brown before. However, his career can be saved. Expectations must change, though. He’ll never be a first-option on offense, but can anchor a defense with his rebounding and athleticism.

I’m thinking Ben Wallace, Tyson Chandler, or Marcus Camby. I’m definitely not thinking Dwight Howard or Yao Ming.

But Brown must accept being a blue-collar, lunchbox guy. Right now, he’s unsure of himself and looks lost when on the floor.

Andrew Bynum benefited from training with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The Lakers, if they extend Brown beyond this year, should hire Horace Grant to serve as his mentor.

This would help. Without changes, Brown’s career will continue to feel like a bad day at the office.

I think it’s great that you guys are so nice to him. Frankly i think you can’t see the forest for the trees, even casual basketball fans could have predicted how Kwame’s first two starts after Bynums’s injury would go. I would love for this guy to show up, but now, so many years after the trade, there are no positive expectations at all. I expect passes to bounce off his chest, I expect him to miss dunks (has he even made one since he came back?), i expect him to execute little flipshots under the basket that not even Kareem would attempt. This guy has got a body, but no brain. Too bad he already saw the Wizard. .

What does he think of his own career is the question. As young as he is. he’s rich lets face it he doesn’t have to be a good player , he can do just enought to be in the NBA for several years and he’s set.He doesnt owe anybody anything, Maybe he just doesnt have it to be great. and maybe he already knows that, or maybe he’ll wake up and surprise us one day. But if not let people talk junk about him all day ,I bet he laughs at all the comments when he drives home in his Benz and Big House. .

Hi Belgian Guy. Thanks for reading and thanks for the comment. I agree Kwame can be productive and Jordan killed his confidence. The stories from Washington are legendary. However, I think he needs to stop worrying about scoring and focus on winning a rebounding title. If he averages 12 board per game the points (between 10-15 per night will follow. He should focus on using his physcial gifts to be an energy guy. Does he need a change of scenery? Perhaps! But L.A. was perfect because the media focused on Kobe. Brown just needs to work. He apologized to teammates for his play on Friday, which is a start. So who know? Hopefully, he picks things up. I agree with you ... he has the skills to be productive. Thanks again for reading. O! .

I went to H.S with Kwame. He was overhyped in then, I was shocked he was the 1st overall pick in the draft, and that he even got drafted out of H.S. But I was even more surprised that Jordan was the one who made this move. Mentally he has always been soft, and his skills for a big man was soft. Back then he looked good because he looked like a man against boys, similar to Eddy Curry, but really both are that special .

Hy Oly: this is what’s wrong with kwame brown: he’s talented enough to be a 15 and 8 player ,but his psyche has been crushed since a guy named michael jordan crossed his path. he just cant handle the pressure, and he seems like a real nice guy. too nice and sensitive to handle the pressure of being a top pick, and having to play for the la lakers. I think he’d do great if he’d be traded to some low expactation team (twolves,....) where can just play without having people screaming at him for not being the next KG. Kind of like sebastian telfair. well, kind of ....you know what i mean....Kind of like Joe smith, i mean he’s playing allright , last year with the 76ers and now with the bulls. .
