Cheryl Ford added a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Shock, who remained the WNBA’s only unbeaten team with a 6-0 record.
Shannon Johnson chipped in with 12 points and Swin Cash tallied 11 for Detroit, which is off to the best start in franchise history.
Asjha Jones netted 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists for the Sun, who are now 4-3 on the season. Lindsay Whalen added 19 points for Connecticut.
The Sun deadlocked things at 71 on a Katie Douglas lay-in with just under three minutes left but the Shock answered with a pair of Cash free throws and a Smith three over the next two minutes to put the game away.
