Hartford, CT (Basketball News) - Rashad Anderson scored 17 points and Rudy Gay netted 11 with 10 rebounds as No. 7 Connecticut rallied to beat Indiana, 74-69, at the Hartford Civic Center.
Denham Brown contributed 13 points and Josh Boone added 12 for the Huskies (3-0), who overcame a 13-point second half deficit.
"It was crazy to come back from that kind of deficit," said Gay. "The crowd helped us through it. They really cheered us on and helped us play defense like we’re capable of playing."
Bracey Wright led all scorers with 28 points for the Hoosiers (2-2).
The Hoosiers extended a five-point halftime lead to 54-41 after a pair of free throws by Robert Vaden with just over 13 minutes remaining. Antonio Kellogg, however, hit a three-pointer to start a 17-1 run by Connecticut.
Boone’s layup gave the Huskies their first lead, 56-55, since the five-minute mark of the opening half. Brown capped the run with two free throws to give UConn a 58-55 advantage with 7:11 to play.
"We were eventually able to win the battle of the boards, go on a 17 to one run, stop them 11 straight times, hold them to 32 percent and do the things we needed to do to win," said Connecticut head coach Jim Calhoun.
A dunk by Boone put the Huskies up by five, 62-57, with just under five minutes remaining. Indiana refused to go away and pulled within two, 62-60, on a basket by Vaden with under four minutes to play.
Gay muscled inside for a basket and was fouled with 3:12 left. After the free throw the Huskies led, 65-60. Anderson’s put back and then a free throw gave Connecticut a six-point lead, 70-64, with 38 seconds left.
Vaden buried a three-pointer to pull Indiana within three, but Kellogg hit a pair from the line with 24.6 seconds left to keep the Huskies in front, 72-67.
The Hoosiers missed on three attempts from behind the arc and UConn escaped with the victory.
Indiana took its first lead, 25-23, on a basket by Wright with just under five minutes to play in the opening half. Mike Roberts scored the next four points to give the Hoosiers a six-point advantage.
A three-pointer by Roderick Willmont gave Indiana a 38-29 lead before the Huskies scored the final four points of the half to cut the Hoosiers’ lead to five at the break.
Wright hit a pair of three-pointers and finished with 16 points in the first half to lead all scorers.
