NCAA Game Summary - North Carolina at Florida State

02.7.2005

Tallahassee, FL (Basketball News) - Rashad McCants led four players in double figures with 16 points as No. 2 North Carolina pulled away from Florida State in the second half for the 81-60 win at the Donald L. Tucker Center.

Raymond Felton chipped in with 14 points, while Marvin Williams and Sean May had 13 points and eight rebounds apiece for the Tar Heels (19-2, 8-1 ACC) who won their fifth game in a row. Melvin Scott finished with eight points off the bench in the victory.

Von Wafer paced the Seminoles with 14 points and Anthony Richardson tallied 13 in the loss. Florida State (11-11, 3-6) has lost two of three contests and fell to 8-5 at home this season. Todd Galloway pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Already leading 14-13, the Tar Heels used a 15-2 burst, to grab a 14-point advantage with 5:46 to go in the first half. Williams’ highlighted the flurry with five points.

Trailing by as many as 18, the Seminoles scored the final nine points of the half and went into the break down only nine, 38-29.

"I was very disappointed in their aggressiveness," said Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams of his team’s first-half performance. "I told them Florida State was more aggressive the last five minutes of that first half and that’s what happened last year," referring to the Seminoles’ victory over UNC in Tallahassee last season.

Florida State quickly trimmed the Tar Heels lead to one after they knocked down four consecutive three-pointers early in the second half. Richardson started the three-point barrage, while Wafer connected on a pair and Diego Romero capped it with his to bring them within, 49-48.

That would be as close as the Seminoles would get the remainder of the contest. With North Carolina up 57-52 and 11:55 to go, the Heels went on a 17-2 run, keyed by six points between Felton and McCants, to lead by 20 and put the game out of reach.

"In the second half we were more of that team that can fight you and win," said Williams.

Florida State went nearly 7 1/2 minutes without a field goal during the North Carolina surge.

The Tar Heels led by as many as 22 in the second half.

North Carolina leads the all-time season 32-8...The Tar Heels shot just 40 percent from the floor but went 21-of-28 from the charity stripe...Florida State committed 22 turnovers compared to North Carolina’s nine...The Tar Heels controlled the glass, outrebounding the Seminoles 38-31.
